Superbowl During Covid

Postby yoder » Wed Feb 03, 2021 8:43 pm

I'm looking at a very quiet day here, no big parties, no high fives and yelling in joy when Brady gets sacked, my wife is working, our boy may or may not be here, etc. I'm a lone soldier.

It sounds depressing, right?

Well f*** that! I'm throwing a rack of ribs into the smoker, making some ranch dip, snagging some chips and veggies, I'll have some Jameson on standby, then some IPA's and Coors Light on hand. Setting up a Zoom with some friends on a tablet with a battery charged to 100% and I'm off to the races. This will definitely be the most memorable SB in my life, obviously aside from the Hawks three appearances, though two of them I've forgotten about...kinda. I'll rephrase, the strangest SB in my life.

What are your plans Shackers?

I'll be working rooting against Brady. No one player should win 7 Super Bowls.

Way to make the best of it, yoder. Your spread sounds good. I might try to order some BBQ at work. Ribs sounds good.

Nice thread, Yoder.

There's no doubt about it. I'll be rooting for the Chiefs. They were one of my favorite teams growing up during the Hank Stram era. I can still name many of the starters, like Mike Garrett, Lenny Dawson, and Lionel Taylor, and on defense with Buck Buchanan, Bobby Bell, and Willie Lanier. Plus I can't stand that prick Tom Brady and don't care for Bruce Arians. For me, it's like choosing a favorite in a typical western, rooting for the cowboys wearing the white hats vs. the bad guys in the black hats. I have watched every Super Bowl live, starting with Packers-Chiefs in 1967.

Being that we are both 66 years old, the wife and I received our first vaccine 2 weeks ago, so we could probably host a modest party. But we've concluded that it would be foolish to take even a modest risk when we're so close to maximum protection. My wife has two auto immune diseases, MS and RH, so we've been very careful and don't want to throw it all away when we're this close. We're not coming out from under our rock until 2 weeks after our 2nd shot, hopefully in the first week of March.

Therefore we have nothing special planned. I'll likely watch it like I have any other game this season, watching part of it in my garage while exercising on my treadmill or elliptical. "Miller Time" isn't until 6:00pm. I break my routine only when in the presence of company.

Ill be watching at home with a house full of non football fans. I'll be rooting for the Chefs of course (if my son was still here he'd be watching with me, he's a KC fan) and if trends hold true the rest of the family will shut the door to my level of the house and watch whatever on 2 or 3 TV's upstairs... although chances are I won't be as loud as I am during a Seahawks game so the doo might stay open, which means having our dog lay at my feet for most of the game.

I've got my bottle of Devil's Cut and a six of Corona Premier (not my favorite beer, but the best low carb choice) and my usual 2 days after the game off so there might be drinking involved.

Hi Yoder. We will have two people (just us), zoom and FaceTime ready, will have dropped our cash off at our friends around the corner and will be looking for scores at the end of the quarter. I’ll make some KC style BBQ, and we will have fun, save the dog who hates football. Go Chiefs!

I thought Russell would win more titles, but it hasn't happened. I never assume anything. I'm sure people thought Marino would win a title at some point. People expected Rodgers to have another title by now.

Mahomes needs to step up and strike while the iron is hot. Great teams can fall apart in the span of a few years and never get within sniffing distance of a title. We had the number one points allowed defense for 4 years. We dominated the Broncos who were the highest scoring offense in NFL history in the Super Bowl. I figured we would win another title and get back for another one before it all fell apart. Nope. One egregious coaching mistake and an amazing defensive play by a role-player toppled Seattle and we never been back to form.

Brady got 6 rings and 10 trips. Mahomes needs another ring. Chiefs could fall apart next year and never get close again. Then Mahomes be on his way to being another Rodgers or Marino.

I hope Mahomes gets another ring and goes back to back. Old Dawg Brady can retire with his six rings. He's don't need another pile of gold to go with his excessive riches.

Brady's life has been way too good. I don't even know if you could make a good sports movie of Brady's life. It would be watching a baby born into a good, wealthy family and then it just kept getting better and better. Rich supermodel wife after leaving his rich supermodel girlfriend. In the slot of machine of life, Brady hit the jackpot and kept on winning.

I can't see him beating Mahomes at 43. It would be too much of a good thing. They might as well rename the Lombardi Trophy to The Brady Trophy if he wins. It's too insane to imagine.

KC's two starting tackles are out. Mahomes could see more pressure than usual. Me, I don't care who wins. Not rooting for either team. I'm just going to objectively enjoy the game. I don't hate Brady. He gets a bad rap because he's an introvert and a private person; not socially a warm, fuzzy athlete. He's not media friendly but not such a bad guy in the whole I think.

Speaking for myself, my angst goes a little further than Brady's simply not being a warm, fuzzy media guy. His behavior during the Deflate Gate scandal was childish, destroying important evidence by trashing his cell phone. He walked off the field without shaking hands with the victorious opposing QB in a SB loss. He took nearly a million dollars of tax payer money from a fund that later ran out of money that was meant for struggling employers to pay their employees during the pandemic and used it for his own company. He got into a spat with the Pats over bringing his personal trainer with him in team activities. He is not what I would call a good sport/role model. He's a spoiled brat, and I hope the Chiefs defense throws him around like a rag doll.

I'm just hoping for a good game that's close and not influenced by the Referees.
I don't really care who wins as it won't affect me either way.

Wow, thats dark River. Seriously, I think DFGate was fear, IF he had admitted it, he felt the Commish would have banned him from that Super Bowl, and with RG he just may have.

The PPP? I don't recall it running out of money. In fact, that program seems to have had a lot of money left. But people stopped taking it because they didn't want the limitations imposed.

Yeah. Brady's no choir boy. You left out that he left his pregnant supermodel gf for another supermodel gf that he married and impregnated.

Just goes to prove you can be the best at something and not have to be a choir boy.

"The Lakers qualified for and received a loan under the Payroll Protection Program," a Lakers spokesperson wrote in a statement emailed to CNN Business. "However, once we found out the funds from the program had been depleted, we repaid the loan so that financial support would be directed to those most in need.

Actually it's more of an outrage that companies with deep pockets ran by multi billionaires were able to receive taxpayer funds that were meant for otherwise successful small businesses that were pushed to the verge of bankruptcy due to the pandemic, but I don't want to take the thread off topic.

Congrats to Tom Brady and the Bucs Defense for this boring game. The only thing more boring then the game was the halftime show with some Canadian I've never heard of sort of singing something. For the Chiefs, welcome to the world of 'one year dynasties' -

What a stupid game. This is exactly what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter how great you look as a QB, how unstoppable, or how much you stand out, it can all end in one game. Mahomes looked pedestrian and had the likely worst game of his career.

Now Brady is 7 of 10. Just sickening. How the hell does one QB have 7 Super Bowl rings and 10 trips to the Super Bowl. It is beyond my mind to comprehend. This is just not supposed to happen. 43 years old and he wins the fricking Super Bowl for the 7th time. WTF is that.

If we all find out we're in The Matrix and Tom Brady is offered the red or the blue pill, he's taking the blue pill.

At least Russell and Seattle put up a much better fight than Mahomes and the Chiefs. Mahomes and the Chiefs got beat. Seattle lost because of the stupidest play call with poor execution and an amazing role-player play in the final minute. Chiefs lost this game with The Golden Child Mahomes in the 1st quarter.

It was a pretty quiet Super Bowl Sunday for us. No friends or relatives to spend the afternoon and evening with, just the Mrs and me. Prior to yesterday, there was only one time, in 1977 and my senior year in college, well before Super Bowl parties were the standard, that I've watched the game with such solitary companionship. I watched most of the first half from my treadmill and didn't even have a beer, opting for a couple glasses of wine out of a box.

The cry "wait until next year" has never been so prevalent with me as it has been this season. I really miss not having a regular football experience and, assuming things are back to normal, plan to make up for lost time next season. Two weeks from now I should have my 2nd Covid jab in my shoulder.

It was just the two of us, too but with a game like that it didn't really matter.
Hopefully the Covid variants are kept in check and next year is as normal as it can be.
The Bucs Defense won this game, shutting down one of the most prolific Offenses in the NFL, but the saying that Defense wins championships held true on Sunday.
As well, the Refereeing early made a difference in momentum and had KC got that INT with about 8 minutes left in the 2nd Quarter that was called a pass interference on KC, it might have been
different or at least made it more interesting. This win reminded me of the first SB win by Tampa with the Defense playing great and Dilfer managing the Offense, so congrats to them on their
2nd Lombardi trophy.

Outside of garbage time, the Chiefs got into the red zone just twice, settling for a FG and turning it over on downs. Outside of that, KC's entire offense was two 50ish range FG's. Brady and the Bucs offense were the beneficiary of some short fields. The penalty on the punt return where the KC punter dropped the snap cost the Chiefs 40 yards of field position.

Being the anti-Brady fan that I am, it was a very disappointing game topping off the worst football season since the strike year in the 80's. And now the weather forecast is calling for temperatures in the low teens. Ugh.

Brad Johnson was QB for Tampa. You're thinking of Baltimore with Dilfer.
