You can ignore last season completely for at least two reasons.
1. He was playing hurt the whole year.
2. The Saints suck horribly, and had no clue whatsoever how to properly utilize Browner.
Pete will use him the way he used to be used (and like I said, hopefully at strong safety as well, where I think he would instantly be one of the leagues best actually). Most importantly, he won't be asked to start unless he EARNS it in camp. Which he very well might if he's healthy again. At worst, he'll bring intensity to special teams.
At best he can play meaningful minutes, possibly (outside shot) even start, and will bring that intensity that he always plays with, that fighting swagger intimidation factor that he always brings, both to the locker room and to the field.

Honestly, if he makes the team, he'll be a sub package corner( a specialist if you will) specifically used to combat larger, physical receivers ( like an Aquan Boldin etc) who are "grabby" themselves. Lane will be the second starter, moving inside to the nickel when a team like that is faced. I could also see him playing a LB spot in obvious passing downs and drawing a TE split, as well as backing up Chancellor in a pinch.

But given the thin depth at SS and CB, I think it's a good plan to see if he can beat out the young'uns.
