Actually he got further out ahead of it than that, his announcement that he'll stand for the anthem next year is a week or so old. Not that the fact that is was anticipatory rather than reactive effects the your point about his motive ...

The article said "about the same time" and I said "once it became apparent", so there's not a lot of difference. As you stated, the point was that his motive for discontinuing his protest was driven by his declining monetary value.
