I'm not sure what you are thinking of, but Sidney Rice went to Switzerland for a "procedure" about 5 years ago. It was similar to this one, as I understand it, but at the time was not legal here in the states. There is something different about the two procedures (something in the way the blood platelets are separated... I think

They do draw out 2 pints of your own blood and while it is centrifuged it isn't separated out into platelets but is heated and incubated for 24 hours to stimulate the body's own immune and regenerative responses.
Seems to me having your own blood be your medicine is about as optimal a treatment as there is (assuming of course that it works).
