2013 Seahawks. Really that good?

Postby trents » Mon Dec 11, 2017 9:09 am

I've often wondered if that Superbowl win was due more to a weak year for the other teams than it was to such a good Hawk team. And what we have seen since is really the corrective to that throughout the league?

They were pretty good in 2012, but didn't quite make it and very good in 2014 as well, so I think they were very good.
They physically dominated most teams in those years, too and the mental edge was finely honed.
Health was also a big factor as it is with any team making it deep into the playoffs.

What happened in 2013 was the same thing that's happened to just about every other SB winning team for the past 30 or so years: All the stars lined up. We had a relatively injury free year, caught a few breaks in some close games, benefited from some favorable matchups at ideal times. Sometimes it just isn't good enough to be the best team.

We had one of the historically best Defenses in NFL history over that span (including that year). We were the number 1 team (by far) in football outsiders DVOA (basically a ranking system that takes into account a bunch of stuff). We actually had the 5th BEST EVER DVOA, which is pretty impressive. We were (obviously) the number 1 ranked team in Defensive DVOA, but we were also 7th in Offensive DVOA. We were the number 1 scoring D and number 8 scoring O. Based on opponents win-loss record we had the 10th most difficult schedule in the league that year (Denver had the easiest schedule in the league). By every metric that can possibly be used we were really that good!!!!

It's pretty hard to argue the opposite. In addition to the Lombardi, we had the best regular season record, and we have to consider the fact that both the preceding and following seasons were very good, so you can't say that the season was a fluke or that we suddenly caught lightning in a bottle. The 2013 Seahawks were very, very good.

Defensively we were that good, I would argue because of our depth. We had a lot better backups than we do now. Offensively no, we had a Beast at RB and a mediocre OL. It was good enough not to get in the way of the real LOB not the tatters of it we see now. We lost a lot players that year that were great backups and role players.

I don't know, I think you are underselling the Offense that year... top 8 scoring O... top 4 rushing... PC has never been about blowing the doors off yards wise offensively. That was one of the most efficient offenses in the NFL (as evidence by their 7th ranked Offensive DVOA). Also, 8 of our games were against teams ranked in the top 10 defensively. In our division alone we had 3 of the top 10 d's in the league and all ranked in the top 15... Overall a very tough schedule.

I think we see how important Lynch was to the run game. It hasn't been the same since he left.
He broke more than 100 tackles for more than one year and maybe as much as 3 straight.
In one year, he broke almost 120 tackles with the nearest RB at around the 85 mark.
That gives a lot of room for others in the Offense to excel more than they otherwise would when Defenses have to key on Lynch and get after him in numbers.
In this case, Lynch made the stats appear much better than they otherwise would be with just an average, solid RB and it might be why there was nobody waiting to replace him.
The rest of the Offense? It was serviceable, but maybe not deserving of any top honors.

I agree. Although at the time we complained about it a lot, in retrospect our offensive line was above average, not mediocre. Additionally, we had some really good blocking tight ends, in particular Zach Miller. Plus we were a run first, ball control team, which tends to keep down the offensive stats.

Yes, Zach Miller. He was worth more than we realized at the time, I think. All the teams with a good running game have tight ends (and split ends) who are willing and capable blockers. If Pete and John really want to get back to "our identity" a team whose offense is built around the ground game then they need to consider that in the future with draft picks and free agent acquisitions.
