And if he's willing to take a pay cut.

??

His salary for this year just became fully guaranteed, there is no 'pay cut' that figures into it is there?

There will be no pay cut. If he gives money back (highly unlikely) that is the only way.

1. I seriously doubt he will get medical clearance for his neck to continue playing.

2. If he DOES get clearance, would he even be playing for the Seahawks? He might just not make the 53 man roster, his play has fallen off that much. Being 100% guaranteed, I guess the Hawks won't lose anything (other than a roster spot) so they might as well keep him around.

3. My prediction is (I am usually wrong) that IF Kam does get clearance AND he does make the roster, he won't play in every game and will suffer more injuries and most likely won't even finish the season.

Sorry Kam, but it is time for you to GO. Either that brother, or you play so lights out that you and Sherm battle it out for the "come back" player of the year! One can only hope.

And our team remains in limbo at Strong Safety because Pete and/or John can't make the hard decisions to stay competitive.

What exactly is the hard decision they can’t make in this case?

Cutting Kam before his salary was guaranteed to move on from a strong safety past his prime and unable to stay healthy and play at a high level.

The can't cut him during the same league year an injury took place until he passes a physical in that league year. Basically, unless he passed a physical before March the Hawks couldn't cut him per league rules. By that time his guarantees already have kicked in so there was literally nothing the Hawks could do. Furthermore cutting him after March is very difficult as well. Cutting him will cost the team 14 mil in dead money. If he is on the roster he only costs the Hawks 9 mil. The only thing the Hawks have done wrong in this is the language in his salary that allowed the contract to be guaranteed before March, but that is written in a lot of contracts. It was just unfortunate that he may have sustained a career ending injury 1 year into this extension.

Nice post, mykc. Thanks for explaining the details in his contract. I obviously don't follow that stuff as closely as you do.

Good on the Hawks for giving Kam money whether he plays or not.

I don't think it is good on the Hawks. I think it was just something that they had to do based on circumstance.

Well, that makes more sense as to why they're doing what they're doing. What happens to the money if he isn't medically cleared to play? Can't they negotiate a pay out as they' done in the past and cut the player? Or does seniority affect that as well? Reality is even if Kam comes back from the injury, he's lost more than a step and isn't reliable at his position any longer. How does Belichick keep cutting and replenishing his team? Is he just that much smarter when it comes to contracts as well?

Yeah they can cut him when the new league year starts. They can also negotiate some sort of buy out, but Chancellor has no reason to go down that path because his contract is already fully guaranteed. At this point there is nothing the Hawks can realistically do if they want to get rid of him unless he passes a physical and they trade him (although I would argue that isn’t very realistic as nobody is going to want to take on that contract unless the Hawks send a draft pick too).

I guess you just confirmed Belichick is that much smarter about contracts as well. I don't hear him ending up stuck with overpaid players. He would have cut bait with Kam a year or two ago seeing the writing on the wall and ended up with more picks to replenish the team.

There is no doubt about that. The Pats rarely if ever wind up with an albatross of a contract. They are one of the only teams that constantly lives by the motto that it’s better to get rid of a player a year too early than a year too late.

The sad thing is the same people that will admire Pete for "doing the right thing with Kam" as they see it will be complaining about Pete losing too many games when contracts like this come back to haunt us. You really do need to be a cold individual to win forever and the reality is Pete no longer has it in him. He was churning this roster based on performance when he first arrived, ruthless cutting contracts and trading, now he seems too attached to players and unwilling to cut bait to keep that competitive edge. It's unfortunate as that early Pete and John leave no stone unturned built us an amazing team that challenged for a Super Bowl. Now it seems we're coasting. There really is only only one Belichick.
