I'm with Obi on this one. Unless it's done to make the game safer....and they would have to show me a comprehensive study that proves that players are at a higher risk of life changing injuries, ie head and neck injuries, on kickoffs vs. plays from scrimmage, then I'm completely against it.

Dumb ideas hasn't stopped them from making changes before, so it wouldn't surprise me if something like this is being discussed or even being planned.
However if punting is much safer than kickoffs, it might lessen the leagues exposure to claims down the road that they did nothing to mitigate serious injuries.

It would stop exciting returns from our Lockett from happening.

There would still be the punt return possibility for exciting returns as well as a blocked punt.
Unfortunately it would mean the end of the on side kick.

The rule change to kickoffs that went into effect this season has already pretty much eliminated the onside kick.

Teams have still tried it and I would think most ST coaches are looking for a way to increase the odds of success given the new rules.
If someone does find a way (like maybe the kicker getting extreme height as an example), it would become relevant again.

Agreed. Dickson tried a couple of drop kicks on kickoffs, but I don't think they were onside kick attempts. Perhaps if he or someone else were to perfect that art they might be able to employ them as onside kicks.

on the other side, we gave up one to SFO just last week that, in essence, turned the game around.

Sounds like you'd be eliminating a huge part of the game. I would not support that idea.

It'd be eliminating the roll of the dice from a game of chess.

Slate? Really?
I don't know about the source. Reading sports column from slate is like listening to Dr. Jill Stien talk about a cover 2 defense.

Lets just put them in shorts and tenny runners, take off the helmets and put flags on them.

Or hell why not just show up in pads, meet at the 50 and flip a coin. winner wins and loser loses and go get undressed and go home.

I have HAD IT with the pussification of the league. Between that and the travesty the officiating has become this lifelong 59 year old fan is really considering shutting it off.
