My point which I probably didn't state so well, is that Mike is so key to a team that when the slightest fall off happens it has a HUGE impact on the overall defense. Thus, when they fall off, they fall off like a hockey stick.

yeah, I was thinking of him too when I wrote that but I think his was more of a injury thing. I think the average NFL career for those players who make a starting roster in their rookie year is like just over 6 years. (those that don't start in their rookie year is 3.3 years.).
This whole contract for Bobby will be past that 6 year mark so we are playing with borrowed time. Urlacher, Singletary, Lewis all made it past 12 years so it isn't out of the question but I think the logic on NFL teams is shifting from when they all played. Sinking tons of money in non-franchise QB players is getting harder and harder to justify on teams. There's an argument that can be made that he's the "Franchise QB of the defense" but he isn't hands off like the real QB is in today's rules.
There's something about crossing that 30 year birthday that makes people realize they are NOT indestructible.
I'm really conflicted on this one as I truly like Bobby and would love to see him here but I'm just as committed to not mortgaging our future on a less than even money bet. Bobby is on that line for me - not because of his heart but simply because NO ONE CHEATS FATHER TIME!!!!
