Can someone please explain to me why the Jets were so upset that comment was allowed to be heard on the air? Does the term "ghosts" have some loaded, insider meaning in the NFL I'm not aware of?

Yeah this tells other teams he is scared. The Pat reaction was a riot. The fault lies in Jets F/O, that is a trainwreck anyway, for letting them mike him in the first damn place.

I have mixed emotions. Yes, ESPN used some poor judgement when they allowed that comment to be aired. It's not too different from the judgement they exercised when they allowed an obviously inebriated Joe Namath to be interviewed live at halftime a few years back. Their 'filters' or sensors seem to be a little lackadaisical.

But that's what players and teams get when they agree to be mike'd up. It wasn't an obvious, no brainer screw up to let a comment like that leak out and the reaction to it is way disproportionate to the oversight. Personally, I could do without the mike'd up fluff. It's not going to influence me to watch or stay tuned into the game and is of little entertainment value.

Throughout his career, even after his first year at USC, Darnold has shown poor judgement and/or poor field vision when heaving the rock. It's not what he sees but what he doesn't see it seems.

I think it has backbone connotations.

To be fair to Darnolds performance I've seen Russ toss 4 picks in a game. But oh BTW he won it in OT and took Seattle to the SB

Here's my deal. Did Arnold get so spooked by the ghosts he forgot he was mic'd up? Did Gase? IMO if you agree to wear the microphone it's fair game what comes out of your mouth.

It also appears that Gase is a lousy coach. I know he's had QB issues all year but he's got one of the better backs in the league in Bell and next to Miami they look like the worst team in the league, their win over an overconfident Dallas team notwithstanding.

It looks to me like Darnold is well on his way to being David Carr 2. What the hell was he doing still out on the field getting pummeled and looking horrible late in that game ? I said it on my couch and so did the announcers in the booth. There was no point in leaving him out there to be completely humiliated in the 4th quarter. I saw Belichick bench the GOAT against KC a few years ago and win the SB a few months later.

I completely agree. Darnold should have been out of there at the start of the 4rd quarter, if for nothing else, to protect him from injury in a hopelessly lost game. Kitchens benched Mayfield a couple weeks ago under very similar circumstances. In Darnold's case, I might even go a step further and bench him in his next game, at least for the first quarter. He definitely doesn't have his head on straight.

As far as him being the next David Carr, this is only his 2nd season, but it certainly doesn't look good, especially playing for a hopelessly lost train wreck of a team like the Jets.

Yeah, I wondered at the decision to leave Darnold out there to the bitter end as well. Doing so not only subjected him to more risk for injury but also probably eroded his self-confidence even further, which looks to be rather fragile at times. And maybe the three weeks of being out with mono had something to do with is poor performance as well.
