I agree Bob, They’re going after Tra Lance or Justin fields. They’re done with Jimmy Garoppolo. If they don’t move off him this year they’ll certainly keep him around to ground in the other quarterback and that’s it

After selecting a QB, they’ll probably try to trade JG and save Cap space next year or maybe even this year.
The Dolphins have traded back up to #6 so it’s been an interesting day so far.

Gee, Jimmy G didn't work out for them. Unbelievable. Belichick tricked another team into giving him picks for a backup.

One of the talking heads on NFL.com said that the 49ers started with the team with the #6 pick and worked their way to the #3. That may indicated they value someone other then a QB so much, it's worth it to move up. After the first two QB's, the #3 and 4 QB in this draft have not been regarded as a 'sure-thing' or a stud unless you have absolutely no one else.
It seems that the 2nd round pick they paid for Jimmy G wasn't much and are now willing to trade him off after a couple of years.
His contract is not very friendly, either. Any other team would have to take on the contract of a QB that the 49ers want to move away from.

If it's a QB - that's a lot to pay. An unproven rookie that's likely #3 in his class....but if they really believe they have the line on THEIR GUY, then I guess you have to do it. But, you'd better be correct (don't want an RG III re-do)...it appears, the #3 guy is the ND State guy, a sophomore that didn't even play last year. Could be Fields.

I'm not convinced that it's going to be the 3rd choice at QB. Maybe they use that to trade up to #1 or #2? I doubt that would happen, but you never know.
However... about a decade ago this happened and this is what I think the 49ers are after, as they don't have a #1 or even a real #2 receiver right now.
Cleveland traded its sixth overall pick to Atlanta for five picks in all: its first-, second-, and fourth-round picks in 2011, as well as its first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.
The Falcons selected wide receiver Julio Jones. To me, this makes more sense for the trade and the "Jimmy G" is our starter mantra coming from Santa Clara. I don't follow college that closely, but I've heard a lot about the Alabama star receiver being a 'sure thing' (that's what they all say!)

The Niners still have the option of trading out of the pick if the player they're after isn't there. It would be foolish of them if they simply wanted any one of 3 QB's.
Zach Wilson of BYU has been zooming up the mocks, most having him in the top 3. Could that be the player the Niners are after and the sudden rise of Wilson's stock the reason why the Niners were so aggressively moving up in the draft?

From what I've heard and read, some people really like Zach Wilson. What I hear most often is if he played in the SEC, he would be the
consensus #2 pick for a team needing a QB. I saw him in a couple of games last year and he has something special.

Personally if it were me responsible for the pick I like Zach Wilson better than Trevor Lawrence. I hate to agree with Chris Simms, but on this I do.

RD, that would be insane. They would have to wait until the first 2 picks are gone and THEN in less then 15 minutes, complete a trade and try to find a partner willing to give up as much as they did. That could be problematic, to say the least. What if the "fax machine" breaks? (that happened once a long time ago)

They wouldn't have to spend a lot of time finding a partner for the #3 overall. Most teams will still have their top player still on the board so finding a partner should be relatively simple compared to trading picks at a lower position in the draft. They could already have a contingency plan in place in the event their targeted player isn't there.
Besides, even if they fail to get a trade, the downside wouldn't be all that bad. They'd get "stuck" with one of the top players in the draft.
