Looks like that 2nd round pick turned into a solid starter.

21 million a year? I'd rather have the 2nd round pick. Oh well, when you put yourself in this situation, the player has all the leverage. I hope to the football gods these kinds of trades are done under John Schneider on his own. Williams was I guess a good player on a bad defense, but 21 million a year with 48 million guaranteed? I don't think so.

I'm a little surprised they he'd stay. I guess we overpaid him, but most of the players that signed today seemed to be overpaid a little. IMHO.

I thought he was a "Pete" signing, giving up a second for 10 games with no guarantee, but maybe not.

He played pretty well and it’s only 3 years.
Re-signed Fant, too. 2 years $21M total.
Dissly went to the Chargers and Brooks is gone to the Dolphins and Lewis to the Panthers.

Prices are high right now and I think it is partly due to the unexpected increase in the cap. The amounts of money for OG is crazy.

I don't think that there was any way that we weren't going to resign Williams. He had a bargaining advantage in that JS would have egg on his face for spending a 2nd round pick on what would have been an expensive one-year rental.

Williams was one of the few players in our front 7 that was worth keeping. Glad he's on board.

Yeah. I looked at this stats. He had a good year for us. Given what I'm seeing paid out there for D-line, I guess this is now is about market value.

He got paid, but it doesn't seem out of line with the DT market for his caliber of player. Is it a bit higher than I'd like? Yeah. I was hoping for under $20M/year, but I wasn't expecting that. I thought he'd get at least $20M on the market.

When I think of the difference between Williams and the next tier of DTs, I see some meaningful difference in how that shapes the defense. That $5M/year extra for Williams will be noticeable on the field as I think he's one of the 15 best pocket-collapsing DTs out there. But the difference between what Brooks brings at $10M/year at LB and what a $5M/year LB brings isn't going to change games as much. I think JS and Macdonald saw that the value of the DT position is so high that if you can get a top 15 DT for market rates, you go for it and go cheaper outside the trenches.

After giving up a 2nd round draft choice they had to buck up to some degree. It could have been a lot more and in 3 years he will be 33 so he's at a good age.

Exactly. He had the the third or fourth most pressures amongst interior OL and was solid vs. the run. The top guys are getting over 30 mil/year I think Williams at 21 mil/year is a good investment.

Just a FYI. PFF had Williams ranked at #22 for defensive tackles (they call them 'interior defenders') amongst 132 players that had enough snaps to qualify. Considering that there are usually 2 interior defenders per team, that's a very respectable ranking and by far our highest ranked DL.
