c_hawkbob's annual Three Deep Mock, 2024

Postby c_hawkbob » Tue Apr 09, 2024 9:54 am

Well everyone t's that time again:

Scoring:
- 1 point for each player that we draft
- 1 point for the correct round drafted with an additional 1/2 point for having them listed first in that round
- 1/2 point for each player from your mock that we sign as UDFA’s
- This is a NO TRADES contest. As we are scoring on the number of names from your mock we actually draft everybody has to have the same set of picks to work with.
- It's also based on the picks we have on the books as of this date.

Here's mine:

Round 1 (16)
1- JC Latham, OL, Alabama

2- Dallas Turner, LB, Alabama
3- Jared Verse, Edge, FSU

Round 3 (81)
1- Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M

2- Bralen Trice, Edge, Washington
3- Spencer Rattler, QB, South Carolina

Round 4 (102)
1- Amarius Mims, OL, Georgia

2- Zak Zinter, G, Michigan
3- Roger Rosengarten, OT. Washington

Round 4 (118)
1- Trevin Wallace, LB, Kentucky

2- Josh Newton, CB, TCU
3- Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan

Round 6 (179)
1- Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida State

2- Michael Barrett, LB, Michigan
3- Willie Drew, CB, Virginia State

Round 6 (192)
1- Tanor Bortolini, C, Wisconsin

2- A.J. Barner, TE, Michigan
3- Kenny Logan Jr., S, Kansas

Round 7 (235)
1- Eyabi Okie-Anoma, EDGE, Charlotte

2- Anim Dankwah, OT, Howard
3- Myles Murphy, DT, North Carolina

Good work, Bob! I would be shocked (and thrilled) if Latham was there at #16!

I don't want to see Spencer Rattler on any draft list associated with the Seahawks, lol. He is awful.

I like Cooper, but we really need a true Mike backer. Then again, Macdonald may have other ideas for how to employ the backers in his scheme.

I think Verse would be our logical pick if we stick at #16, but I fully expect a trade down. Also, if Brock Bowers somehow magically falls to #16, I will cease being a fan of this team if they don't grab him haha.

Thanks Bro. Latham would go higher if he were a more solid Tackle prospect, but I think he might wind up playing Guard on Sundays, which would make 16 a good fit for him. He's played some center too so he's kind of a Swiss army lineman.

Rattler's problem was trying to play hero ball on a lousy team. He had a nice Senior Bowl week and I think a few teams will have him on their radar. He's no QB of the future though, but I think a decent back up.

Rattler's processing and reading the defense ability is highly suspect. I might take a flyer on him after the 3rd, but a QB desperate team will likely grab him.

Desperation drives teams to always draft QBs earlier than their targeted value.

c_hawkbob Thanks for doing your mock every year, I really enjoy it and I will post mine closer to the draft.

Rattler is very interesting to me. There is some moxy to his game. He has weathered adversity and come through it, granted some of it self-inflicted. We know JS likes that. His O-line was bad (injuries to 6 linemen, 2 true freshmen starting) and his WR's dropped some balls for sure, but there is some pro style stuff in South Carolina's offense that may make his transition to the pro level easier. Unfortunately, he's just an average athlete with average size and average arm strength. I wouldn't hate it if he was the pick at 81, but I'm reading he is a 2nd round guy. Given the right situation, I think he is a Baker Mayfield type QB.

OK, so here's my list of players that will NOT get a chance to play in Seattle. I've been wrong on almost every pick for as long as I've participated, so here goes.
Like last year, I just selected players I think could be selected by Seattle, but the rounds are in many cases very wrong considering their talent and our needs.

Round 1 (16)
Talese Fuaga, OT
Byron Murphy, DT
Michael Penix Jr., QB

Round 3 (81)
Marshawn Kneeland, DE/OLB
Ruke Orhorhoro, DT
Spencer Rattler, QB

Round 4 (102)
Ben Sinnott, TE
Luke McCaffrey, WR
Roger Rosengarten, OT

Round 4 (118)
Khristian Boyd, DT
Cooper Beebe, OG
T'Vondre Sweat, DT

Round 6 (179)
Bralen Trice, DE/OLB
Malik Mustapha, S
Sedrick Van Pran, OC

Round 7 (235)
Cade Stover, TE
Michael Hall Jr., DT
Cedric Gray, LB

There are some very interesting selections amongst only our small group.
Some obviously talented players and some others who are under the radar but if you do some work on them are possible quality players.

Well if the Hawk's were going to draft a QB this year it will be in the later rounds. All the relevant QBs are pretty much taken.

Byron Murphy, smaller than the typical chubby DTs, built a lot like Aaron Donald, hopefully he can replicate Aaron Donald.

When it got to our spot, I was sure that we'd take Turner as an edge rusher is more valuable than a DT. But going in, I wanted to see us either fortify our offensive line or go defense, particularly the DL, which is exactly what we did, so I'm good with the pick.

I agree but Edge won't help us as much against the run. When you're 31st against the run and deciding whether to go edge or interior D-line that's more than enough to tip the scale.

I like the Byron Murphy pick, I don't love it though. I was leaning toward Verse but overall I'm happy. Just finished watching a bunch of Murphy's tape and interviews. I really can't recall a Seahawk DT with this much wiggle before.

I agree that given our current roster that drafting a run stuffer had to take priority over an edge rusher, at least in retrospect. But I was listening to the hype and expected us to take the BPA, of which everyone was saying Turner.

I'm sort of like govandals. I'm not hugely excited about the pick, but I'm far from being disappointed. The only time in recent memory that I was really jacked about a pick was when we drafted Aaron Curry, and we all know how that one turned out.

We haven't had real good luck with first round draft picks as evidenced by the fact that we are the only team not to have picked up the 5th year option on any of our first rounders, so maybe it's that realization that's tempering my optimism.

Interesting. I see DT as a more premium position. I'm not sure who was the best DE in the league last season, but take your pick. Bosa maybe? I'd rather have Donald than Bosa. A disruptive DT will ruin a play much more quickly, and he ruins run and pass plays equally.

Murphy isn't Donald—hell, nobody is/was close to Donald—but I'd rather have game-wreckers inside the DL than outside.

I think it might be skewed by our FO's perspective that OL can just be thrown together.
I've said this in another thread but JS said this year that he thought Guards were overpaid and overdrafted. I suspect by his actions (or rather inaction) that he thinks the same for the Center position which is a big mistake and it shows.

Thank you for taking the time, Bob!! I appreciate you!

I don’t know enough about Murphy to say one way or another, but if we would have taken a DB or WR, I would have passed out. Was hoping for Troy…. I wonder if his knee thing scared teams off? All said, I’ll take a 300 lb run stuffer; sure hope he plays like it in the NFL.

First, you're more than welcome! I enjoy doing this as much as y'all do. Second, I think it's more of a positional thing with John, they always said that he and Pete saw eye to eye on most things and I believe not spending a 1st round pick on an O-linemen (under normal circumstances, let's hope there'd be an exception if the next Walter Jones were available!) to be one of those things.

Pick your poison. Would you rather have a DT forcing a Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, or even an Aaron Rodgers to break the pocket to the outside or an edge rusher forcing them to step up? I'll take the latter.

That's not to be interpreted to mean that I don't like our pick. The more I read about it, the more I like it.

That's not to be interpreted to mean that I don't like our pick. The more I read about it, the more I like it.

I'd take the DT. Much harder to find a high quality DT than an edge rusher. You can often manufacture a pass rush, but a you can't manufacture a pocket pressuring DT who can also stop the run and anchor the line. That's why high quality DTs get paid well due to how hard they are to find.

Nobody got any points for this pick but we're all winning so far!
