Finally, an encouraging update. Abe Lucas appears to be doing very well, dead lifting and running without a brace on his surgically repaired knee:

Posting video on his Instagram account, Seahawks right tackle Abraham Lucas could be seen deadlifting without a brace on his surgically-repaired knee. He also provided an update that he has resumed running, an excellent sign on his progress after missing all of the team's offseason program, including mandatory minicamp.

Some good news. This time of year there's nothing much going on so anything that's new info is welcome.
I can't believe that on Thursday it will be only 6 weeks until the first game of the season for the NFL. I don't know where the time has gone but I can't wait until the season starts.

Knees on big guys are so tricky, but I'm glad to hear he's working out. Having George Fant as insurance eases the concern a little bit. No reason to rush Lucas back. Get well dude.

"When I watch him coach, he's doing a lot of teaching," Roberts said. "I think sometimes when you've been coaching in the NFL for a long time, you just assume that these guys know the little things. And sometimes, they don't. They've been so dominant in college that you don't have to worry about if your foot is two inches to the outside or six inches to the outside."

"I love the attention to the details, because they will save you every single time," Roberts said.. "You're going to run up against dudes that are bigger, stronger and faster. … But if your technique is good, you're going to have a chance every single time. And he teaches that to the nth degree."

Maybe this will help in the development of the IOL and Center in particular.

I'll believe it when I see it. We've gone through so many O-line coaches and the build up they will fix the problem with anecdotal evidence, I don't buy it. Then again I don't believe coaching fixes things nearly as much as just having quality talent. If coaching trumped talent, then the NFL would be full of guys who responded well to coaching while the genetic freaks with attitudes wouldn't even make it in the NFL.

The history of the league is full of players along the IOL that didn't have a lot of talent but got by on perseverence, dedication, and listening to coaches who knew how to help their game. It's not uncommon to see players that played 10 or 12 years but were considered marginal in talent but solid in play. Talent can play a big role, obviously but competence in the IOL is huge thing and we haven't had that for about a decade.

The Carroll/Cable years brought us players who were supposed to be talented, but failed - I think in a large part because of coaching. Our OL coaches did well when we drafted Lucas and Cross and put them as starters. The league thought Lucas was a 4th round talent, but injury aside he's much better than that and the consensus of the league in that draft thought Cross was a top OT talent. It seems they were wrong on both in their evaluations as Cross is a serviceable OT and Lucas is one of the better OTs. My point is it's difficult to draft talent without good luck but coaching can make a big difference for those that are coachable and can create a very good OL.

But I agree, I too will believe it when I see it because all we've seen is marginal play along the OL for the last decade and more. But with a new regime there is hope.

Not looking promising for Abe Lucas. His career maybe cut short.

I was expecting it. Guys that size don't usually recover from degenerative knee injuries. He should cut it short to at least live a regular life than risk longer term permanent knee damage.

If he already doesn't have permanent damage. I agree with you, just needs to focus on his health and live out his life. The recovery time and time missed from last time playing has grown so far that I don't think anyone would be surprised right now he decides to hang it up. It would be sad, but also understanding.

That's the thing about Football. One play and your career could be over - or an accumulation of minor injuries from teenage years through College end up limiting a promising future in the NFL.

Reminds me of Sandy Koufax retiring at the peak of his career and when he was the best pitcher in baseball because he was being shot with cortisone and being given pain killers. Another player who comes to mind is Kenny Easley, taking Ibuprofen like it was candy until it damaged his kidneys and shortened his life.

And Marcus Tubbs. That is who I was thinking of when I started to hear about Abe Lucas. A guy that flashed big, but had the bad knee which never bodes well for the big guys.

From the sounds of it from another report is that he is going to play this year and that he has been working out hard, but week 1 is a longshot. Question for me here is how effective is he going to be since he has not been in a first team reps, hasn't been in the joint practices, and hasn't had any real contact since last year? Assuming he is cleared to play, and bless his heart he is 100% healthy, is he coming out guns blazing and sacrificing his body to make every play?

Looks like the team will PUP him, so he can't come back for (I think) 6 weeks.

4 weeks

There saying his recovery time is 2 to 6 weeks, so if he makes it back in 2 he gets a couple extra weeks rest, if it's 6 there's nothing saying they have to bring off the PUP at 4 is there?

I think you are confusing Nwosu and Lucas. Nwosu's recovery is 2-6 weeks, yes - and why they didn't put him on IR to miss 4 games.

We were talking about Lucas, of which there hasn't been anything but wishful thoughts and vague comments from Macdonald on what is going on. Now he is on RESERVE/PUP for the first 4 games.

But to answer your question, after the 4th game teams have a 21-day window to make a decision. They can activate the player and place him on the 53-man roster; place them on injured reserve; or release them.
