News just dropped. For a 3rd. I don't love it, but I understand it. I'll try to be patient.

I kind of get it...we aren't going anywhere with Geno. And, they didn't want to pay him what he was looking for.

I like Geno, but he is what he is now and isn't getting any younger.

Very interesting to see what they do at QB now.

According to Over The Cap, this trade will free up $31 million in cap space with a dead cap hit of $13.5 million. I believe that brings the dead cap hit total to around $46 million this season.

It's a bloodbath! Which actually ain't the worst that could happen (that would have been standing pat). One thing for certain, Jaxon Dart is moving up in my 3-deep!

Finally, John rips the bandaid off and does the full rebuild. No more treading water with middling records hoping to barely make the playoffs as some non-contending teams with fans parroting, "If we punch our ticket, maybe we go on a run" or "We're getting playoff experience." Just engage the rebuild, crash and burn, draft high and do a real rebuild. Don't fight the NFL system. The NFL system is built to require teams to go into a crash and burn period to acquire higher end talent, especially a QB to start a new competitive cycle.

Great news in my opinion.

Strip the team and let Mike MacDonald and John build the culture from the ground up with what Mike Mac wants, not remnants of Pete.

Can't confirm talking heads takes and "sources" as truth, but evidently we offered DK and Geno to the Raiders for Crosby... interesting take, if true. At this point, if we're going to rebuild bring in Gardner Minchew to compete against anyone else and deal with the 4 wins for a year or 2.
We need a first round, real QB and they're aren't any this year.

The other option that I heard (again, who knows) is that Seahawks have made an offer to Darnold and moving Geno opens up the cap space to do it.
I can't see that knowing we might trade DK and we would not have a true #1 receiver this year, but who knows.

Oh, and they also said that Geno initiated the trade request after John and Geno couldn't agree on an extension $$$.

Sam Darnold is the player to watch.

Kudos JS for doing this. I'm OK winning less games for a few years provided I see some growth in the team.
Honestly, not a lot of difference between Geno and Darnold as QB's, but if Darnold is $15mil less per year, give me Darnold. I wouldn't hate if they went even cheaper, Minshew? Fields?

Another thing to consider, whoever is playing QB next year needs to be comfortable with a young draft pick behind them, and I don't see Geno as that guy.

A little surprised we paid a 3rd and 5th for Sam Howell, but only got a 3rd for Geno. Hope JS has a plan.

We got a 4th and a 6th back. So, basically a pick swap for Howell. Considering Vegas is paying all Geno's salary, I think a late 3rd is more than fair.

Yah, I think Cap space was a big factor. It's difficult to rationalize a long term contract to mitigate the Cap hit on an older player.
The other issue might have been Geno's camp was entrenched at a price point higher than JS wanted to go.
I think Darnold is only 28 this year and he's played in the Shanahan/McVay/O'Connell system that Kubiak is also from so he could justify a longer term contract.
But we may get out bid at the end of the day.

I'd forgotten about the return picks. I have an acquaintance on the Raiders offensive staff, they're pretty pumped about getting Geno. I hope Darnold works out, but he has had issues and is another NYJ reclamation project. JS is gonna have to work some OL magic, he was not under the pressure in Minnesota that Geno was here.

I would have liked to have gotten a little higher pick, but considering that we're dumping all of his salary, I'm good with the trade. I'm glad that we traded him to the Raiders vs. an NFC team.

I'm sure that we'll take some fliers on some other veteran QB's and I'm good with bringing any of them in except for Russell and Rodgers.

Bob Condotta’s (Seattle Times) article is interesting. Says an inside source said they offered him a 2-year deal between $40-45MM, but they didn’t get a counter offer, rather Geno asked for a trade on Thursday.

I think JS needs to rethink his approach on re-signing players. He waited until the last minimute to negotiate with Jordon Brooks and lost him. In the case of Geno, again waited until a week before FA to make an offer and only had a couple days to react. If they wanted to retain him, pretty tight timeline to negotiate.

I did see someone throw out Jimmy G’s name.

According to ProfootballRumors:

Recent reporting on the pending free agency of Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold has claimed that he is seeking some modest commitment with a three-year contract, per Diana Russini of The Athletic. A more up-to-date report from senior NFL insider Josina Anderson tells us that Darnold is not limiting his opportunities to three-year deals, instead remaining open to multiple opportunities in hopes of landing any sort of multi-year deal.

Maybe we could get him on a modest 3 year deal and be a bridge QB if we draft one this year or next. He's played for Kubiak before so he could hit the ground running and Kubiak knows his strengths and weaknesses.
Basically he would be a younger and cheaper Geno Smith.

Darkhorse candidate: Daniel Jones who was on the Vikings last year but didn't play. He would also be familiar with Kubiak's Offense.
We have to be prepared if Darnold signs elsewhere.

I'm hearing a lot of talk about him, too. Perhaps we'll use one of those 3rd rounders to move up in the second to snag him, let him fight it out with Sam Howell.

One of the side effects of this trade is that it eliminates another team rumored to be in the hunt for Russell and Rodgers as the Raiders were thought to be a possible landing spot for both veteran QB's. It also reduces the number of teams that might draft a QB in the first or second round. Teams that remain looking for a QB include the Titans, Jets, Giants, Browns, and Steelers.

Things are going to get pretty interesting between now and the end of April.

From what I've heard and read about Dart it seems there is some sentiment that he could go in the 1st. Maybe not top 10, but still somewhere in the later part of the first round.
Would JS use #18 for him? I doubt it but only he knows how he feels about Dart and maybe he has him graded as a top tier 1st round pick.
