Thoughts on our TEs?

Well now that the draft hype has died down a bit. I just wanted to hear some thoughts on what you all like or don't like about our current TE group. In my opinion, I think an effective TE is essential for any type of offense, whether it's run heavy or pass heavy. I envy elite teams out there that have cornerstone TEs, because a solid TE can affect a defense in many ways, whether it be a matchup advantage, or creating running lanes beyond the LOS to spring longer runs.

Statistically, we have gotten 65+ receptions from TE's we have never drafted, and that would be Jimmy G, and Noah Fant. Now I am little surprised we do have Noah Fant on the roster, and all the comps on Elijah Arroyo, is that he another Noah Fant type of player. I thought for cap reasons Noah would have been cut right away, but I guess we still have preseason and all the camps to go through and still can be waived then.

Currently we have on the Roster:

Elijah Arroyo
AJ Barner
Noah Fant
Eric Saubert
Nick Kallerup
Marshall Lang
Brady Russell(listed as FB)

I know they are now listing Brady Russell as a FB, and we just drafted Robbie Ouzts at FB. I doubt we will dress two FBs, but Brady was a TE for us. Eric Saubert was an interesting signing, he is a 8 year vet, but has been mainly a blocker and special teamer his whole career. I would reckon we would dress 4 TEs, and but my biggest wonder if Noah Fant is with us or not. He is currently the 7th highest paid player on our roster for 2025, and carries the 2nd highest cap hit on our roster for 2025. We are paying him to be a top TE for us, but I am not sure the returns are quite there.

With our new OC, are we going to see move usage out of our TE group? Will Elijah step up and be the matchup nightmare we need from a TE?

I haven't done much homework on any of our draft picks, but my impression of Elijah Arroyo is that he's more of a receiving tight end and I wouldn't think he'd be a good for what Macdonald wants to do with our offense, ie run first, run often.

I, too, am surprised to see that they're still keeping Fant, at least for the time being. When we drafted Arroyo with the #50 overall, I thought his days were numbered.

I get the feeling that this group will be sneaky good in time.
Kubiak’s Offenses have used a TE quite a bit so it might be a little bit surprising for us who are used to minimal TE production.

I'm glad we drafted Arroyo because Fant has been underwhelming.

Does Kubiak ever run a 3 TE set? I am unfamiliar with his style. This was from the seahawks.com. I mean it's exciting to see the fullback being part of an offense, but I guess we will see more as camp comes up.

Kubiak will use a fullback
Kubiak made it clear that he will be using a fullback this upcoming season, but who that will be is still being figured out.

"Certainly love playing with a fullback like being 21 and 12 personnel," Kubiak said. "Again, that's going to come down to the strength of our players who we have on our roster and let's use the best 11 out there, let's get the five best eligible deployed out into the route scheme. So those are things we're working on right now, who that's going to be, but we've got to adapt as coaches to our best players on the roster."

Kubiak added that tight ends will be played in the fullback position and they don't know if they'll have to sign a player.

"I'm excited about the guys we do have on the roster, we will play tight ends in the fullback position for sure, but that's a process right now."

I'm a little underwhelmed by the group right now. We'll see how healthy Arroyo can be, but even when healthy he's like a mix between a TE and slot receiver. I think he can be a great weapon if he's used well, but Barner is the only traditional TE on the roster. That's not necessarily a problem, especially if they find a great FB, but I worry that the group doesn't block well enough for a wide zone system.

I would say I am little excited to see how the blocking scheme will work with our TEs, as Barner and Saubert, Russell are more blocking TEs, with Fant and Arroyo are more receiving TEs. Nick Kallerup and Marshall Lang both played 5 years of college football each, and they both combined totaled 5 TDs receiving in their college careers, so I am pretty convinced based on stats they are on the team as blockers, and special teamers.

The Robbie Ouzts pick is intriguing, because it's not often a team selects a natural FB to play FB, most often they convert a TE to H-Back or a fullback. So if we can get a solid FB out of this mix, I am interested to see how it pans out in our running game. Plus I love the look Robbie offers, he looks like that highway trooper you don't want to be pulled over by.

You got me to chuckle out of me with that characterization.

The Seahawks seem to want to upgrade the TE position. They signed another player who was undrafted.
He's a long shot to make the team, but maybe it means the new Offense will require more TE involvement.
