NCAA Votes to Eliminate Spring portal window

Now there will be one transfer portal window each year in January of 10-days duration. I'm all for this! The previous model was chaotic and wrecking college football and basketball and driving some iconic coaches into premature retirement.

The next step that should be taken IMO would be to limit student athletes to one transfer during their college playing career.

I agree wholeheartedly. Between the transfer portal and the NIL crapola, it's literally destroyed the small schools and mid majors.

I've pretty much checked out of CFB. The implosion of the Pac 12 was the last straw.

I'm with you, although for me the NIL/transfer portal was the last straw. It's really no different than pro sports at this point. It's just that the athletes are even more immature and the system seems even more corrupt than in pro sports. I teach at a Division III college, so it hasn't hit us as badly as Division I, but we're starting to see the entitlement coming from high school athletes and parents. It's really disheartening.

It's always been pro sports except the players weren't getting paid, but the "owners" pocketed billions over the decades.

NIL will price all but the wealthiest programs out of business. Ticket prices will skyrocket, ensuring that only the most well-heeled among the fan base will be able to attend games.

Yes, but even the Ohio States and Alabamas are doomed. Interest in sports is declining, football in particular. Participation rates are already down from what they were 30-40 years ago, and the NIL and the thinning of competitive D1 programs will just accelerate it. Gen Z is much less interested in sports than previous generations, and a good number of them identify themselves as anti-sports. They're killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

NCAA is clueless. Haven't they learned that the COURTS, those pesky men and women in black robes don't give a damn what the NCAA wants. You can't limit or control transfers. It's not going to happen. Congress will need to step in and pass universal laws that includes whatever they want to make it supposedly better. Good luck getting that right now if it contains any substantial limits to NIL or movement by the players.

Think of it if it wasn't sports. My oldest grandkid graduates 3 years ago from Virginia Tech and there's a bidding war for his services and his starting pay as a "forensic accountant" is more then I've ever made... and he's on a year over year contract. If his right to earn or move to another job was limited, it simply wouldn't work.

But it is sports. And the clueless ones are the men and women in the black and white robes who make decisions in a moral and spiritual vacuum while searching high and low for some possible connection to the constitution, however far removed it might be from the actual words and intent of the founders.
