The RIP thread

I guess it's because I'm getting to that age but it seems as though heroes and idols (music, sports and otherwise) that have had so much impact on my life are dropping on an all too regular basis now so I figured that instead of starting a new thread for each one, that will eventually fall off the bottom of the page and be forgotten, I'd start a thread that we can add to as these tragedies occur. This way every time it is added to the previous names are there to be perused and reminisced upon.

Now It's Glenn Frey, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter extraordinaire for The Eagles. I'll seriously miss you man, rock on. Your music will be played forever.

RIP Glenn Frey!!!

I hear ya there c-bob with the bolded underlined. What sucks even worse is that with all the celebrity deaths unfortunately I have to add on familial losses also. Starting from last late August My family and I have lost A family friends son (who was my wives first date), early September lost my wife's uncle who was only in his 50's , OCT.3rd Lost my father in law only 59, November a friends dad passed under 60 also, last week another older family friend died, my high school friend mid 30's was flown to harborview with Mersa in his spine and they paralyzed him trying to get it out well sad to say he is going to die, another long time family friend has parasites all over his body and is not doing well at all, and my non blood related Aunt has breast cancer. Hell I could have missed something there but my mind has had enough just thinking this out, lol. It has been a hell of a year of stress and sadness just leading up to all this. That's 5 gone and more on the way, F***.

Sorry to jack your thread with personal crap as I was just expanding on the bolded above. It did feel good to let that out though, so thanks!

Let's all hope for a great 2016 for all!!!

No problem with me and your injecting some of your personal tragedies into this forum, HT. My thoughts are with you.

Glen Frey didn't die. He's hanging out at Hotel California, where you can check in but you can't check out. The Eagles were the first true hybrid country/rock band, or at least the most prominent. I still like listening to their music quite frequently. RIP, Glen Frey.

It has been a strange period of loss. Celebrity loss and personal too, so I totally understand. RIP, Glenn and I hope things start looking up for you, Hawktown. As a breast cancer SURVIVOR, I understand what a challenge it is, for sure. I hope that your Aunt gets well soon.

Time to edit your post, Hawktown....from "thanks, guys" to "thanks, folks".

Nice little online family we have in here. I like the fact that it's a small group.

Kinda like it, too. Post at Blue and it's noise noise noise noise. Here, not always the quickest conversation, but more coherent.

If you think the Blue is bad try .net! On a superfluous BS scale if this place is a 2, the blue would be a 5 and .net a 30.

I post over at .net at times, but there's just too much traffic and their format is too busy, with everyone having to claim some sort of Pete-style catchy one liner or cliché. You can reply on a subject and have the previous replies re-posted to where you have 5 or 6 posts stacked on top of each other. Anthony has used .net to take cover from all the flak he was catching in here about his fetish over Russell Wilson. Posters still call him out on it like we did here, but he has some that are more sympathetic to his way of thinking. The mods are really good guys, though, I've met a couple of them in person. They'll lock a thread if they see it getting out of hand.

I'll post over at the Times if I get bored here or at .net, but that place is pretty dead. Not many post over there anymore.

Obviously this forum is my favorite. It contains many of the personalities I got used to at the PI, which was my first foray into blogging. Also, Mak and Yoder are really cool dudes. They stepped in and filled a void when the old PI went down the tubes.

While most of his music wasn't my particular cup of tea there were always a couple tracks on every album that were pure brilliance. His genius and musicianship are undeniable. Much respect.

RIP Prince.

Agreed. Purple Rain was the first and only album of his that really caught and held me, but like you, I heard a lot more onesies and twosies over the years that I loved.

Very interesting guy, and one of those musical geniuses the world is better off having had.

We need to edit the title of this thread to musician's RIP thread.

Autopsy says that they don't suspect foul play or suicide in his death. It will be several weeks before they release his toxicology results, but my guess is that he either had some sort of genetic defect or that his heart had suffered some sort of previous damage for a man of his age to have died so suddenly and unexpectedly. My college roommate and best friend died in much the same manner, suddenly and in his mid 50's, and his autopsy revealed that he had severe heart damage, perhaps from drug use in his 20's and early 30's. I'm not saying that's what happened to Prince, but it wouldn't be a surprise.

I thought I read it was complications to a Percoset (oxycodone) overdose a few days prior. He couldn't get a private room at the hospital, so he and his entourage bailed while he was still in *very* bad shape.

I hope I'm not spreading false rumors with that, but there are a lot of places reporting it.

Hilarious. And if you haven't seen other Charlie Murphy storytelling, go watch them. He will have you *crying* with laughter.

Like this one:

(watch part II, too- it's 20min total, I think, but worth the effort)

I hate to say it, but I think he killed him self. He tried to do it on the way back from Atlanta and then succeeded a week later. He was having "lucid" dreams talking to other dead musicians such as David Bowie, and this was even before his long term girl friend died a few months ago. For all of his success and money, he must have felt very empty at the end, so sad. Now, his siblings are fighting over the spoils of his life, even sadder.

RIP Prince, this is truly what it sounds like when doves cry...

Aaaaaaand... mark. R.I.P. GOP. You're a clown show wrapped in a dumpster fire now.

I'd just keep laughing but for the first time in my adult life, I genuinely fear for this country. How far we've fallen.

It seems that we've lost a disproportionate number of musicians in the past few years. It must be a generational thing related to the rise of the recording industry.

Chuck Berry is arguably the father of rock and roll, but one could make a strong case for Buddy Holly. In any event, Berry was undeniably a legend. RIP.

Rock and Roll would never have evolved as it did without Chuck Berry. He gave it an edge that other songwriters/bands didn't and many looked to his style to emulate or at least take something from.
You know you're getting old when your musical heroes die at 90.

I actually liked his music as it was a good change of pace from artists like Grand Funk Railroad and Deep Purple. Johnny Carson made a lot of hay mimicking Campbell's hit song "Rhinestone Cowboy".

Despite being trumpeted as middle America's answer to the counter culture revolution of the late 60's, Campbell developed a cocaine addiction that would make many a rock singer blush. R.I.P.
