I quit it about 2 months before the elections in 2016. I had been on there since 2009 and had seen and experienced enough.

I can't believe how much influence it has on people's daily lives and everyone seems ok with them gathering information about everything each one of it's accounts generates. It's like people are 1984ing themselves. Allowing Big Brother to peer at them at the same time allowing all kinds of false information to be put out there for all to see. To me it is contributing NOTHING to society, and is in fact detrimental.

I live half the country away from most of my family and use FB as a tool to stay in touch with them all. You just have to learn to filter out the BS, something that admittedly, way too many are not able to do.

Skype is better for that. Putting up with filtering BS is a waste of time and the ability to actually have video conferencing without the meddling of facebook is a good thing.

No it's not, skype doesn't tell me when all of their birthday's are and when they've gone in to or getting out of the hospital or having a graduation or leaving for a mission etc. With FB I don't have to actually have a face to face conversation with every member of my family every week to stay up to date.

Filtering out the BS is easy, if a post offends you delete and select "never see" anything from it's source rather than the family member that shared it.

You missed the point. Facebook gathers information about YOU. If you are ok with someone you don't even know spying on you then have fun.
Skype is awesome. I visit with my grandkids every Sunday. And I don't need a bot to tell me when important birthdays are.

What do I care if FB is keeping track of my activity on it? I'm not trying to hide anything. Besides, I'd rather have all the ads be stuff I've searched at Lowes or wherever recently than a bunch of crap I got no interest in.

I'm with Cbob on this one. There's so much information about each of us that's legally available to anyone with a smart phone that it's pointless to worry about one medium like Facebook.

30 or so years ago on my favorite program Nova, I watched an episode that was able to reveal tons of details about the sitting VP..at that time, Dan Quayle..and disclosed an extraordinary amount of personal information, like credit card purchases and real estate transactions, all done above board and not violating any laws.

There's nothing we can do to protect our privacy, so there's no sense worrying about it.

L80 is not alone in his fear. One of my best friends, a very intelligent, law abiding, tax paying man with a PhD, is so paranoid of the government gleaning information about him that he pays for everything by check or cash, refusing to pay with a credit card....except at the gas pump. Nevertheless, I am able to go online and find out where he lives, when his birthdate is, who he's worked for, his mother's middle name, the car he drives, how much he paid for his house, his criminal history (he has none), where his son lives, when he divorced his ex-wife, and so on, and so on.

It used to be that you had to hire a private investigator to collect all this information on a person. But nowadays, a person with a cell phone in a couple of hours can do the work of what it took a PI months to do.

Oh, I know! Far from it.

I'm just trying to set his mind at ease. In the information age, there's almost literally no way around it.

I'm afraid to.

There are a few upsides of this information age. No one has any secrets or skeletons in their closets. If you're single and looking for a partner and stumble onto a nice guy/gal that you think you might want to enter into a relationship with, you can check them out in a matter of minutes.

I'm not important enough to give a flying crap. Only people with enough money or something to lose have to worry too much. Online privacy was never included in the Constitution. Once you start using someone else's toys, caveat emptor. I'm not going to live like an Amish person to avoid being electronically tracked.

Let me make this CLEAR. I fear nothing, I just desire to not be on Facebook (for over 7 years I was) and have everyone be able to know whats going on and I don't care if you are at the grocery store. I have more going on in my life than a need to sit in front of a computer and look at mindless B.S.

It is NOT uplifting in any way and I find it humerous that people spend hours of their lives with it. Hey, have at it man, it's you jam.....

Perhaps fear is the wrong term. Mabye concern would be a better one.

What your 'concerns' are now as expressed above are different than what you said in your OP in which you stated that the reason you were leaving FB was due to a concern over their treatment of our private information, which is a concern that several of us stated was not a problem for us, at least not a big enough problem to close our accounts as you have.

But your most recent post I can agree with nearly 100%. We had to fire a guy because we kept catching him on the job playing with his cell phone. He was caught on numerous occasions, worked his way through progressive discipline, was suspended for 3 days because if it, was finally told point blank that if he was caught with his cell phone out of his pocket while he was on the job that he'd be fired, but to no avail, and within a matter of days, was caught again. He was that addicted to it.

I'll put it to y'all this way. I was on there from 2009 to October of 2016. I saw it go from a friendly place to find old friends into this giant conglomerate that basically is global.

I had to get out, and I feel much better for doing so. My wife still has a page and being a therapist she is really in control of her page, however, so much cringeworthy content makes it to her.

I'm simply relieved to be out of it, and all social media. I got by fine my entire life without it, but take a look, if you are in reliance for Facebook to tell you when loved ones birthdays are happening then you have lost touch with humankind, and that what Facebook wants.

My TV was used to interfere in it, too. And Twitter. And the local newspaper. And the New York Times. Also the Washington Post.

[edit]

Also, it's worth noting for anyone pissing their pants over this, that Facebook allowed the Obama campaign to mine its data to their great advantage, too.

Right or wrong is for you to decide, but let's give the selective outrage a break.

I guess each person sees things differently. If you were that bothered by it, then you did the right thing by getting out of it. And yes, just like any other communication medium, it has the potential to be abused and used for illegal and immoral purposes.

I don't use it as a reminder for birthdays, at least not for my immediate family. I use it to stay in touch with my old friends from my past, share pictures and videos with friends and family, make personal announcements like my upcoming retirement. It's not the focal point of my life as it apparently is with others.

Yes, it is. There are people that post here on both sides that talk politics. Some of it is pure fabrication that they find at other sites and bring here, some of it is true. We have people here that believe Trump, a public American citizen for 70 years in this nation, is some kind of Russian spy and hate him. They would believe anything bad about him with smallest amount of evidence whether it was true or not. We have people here that believe Trump is a good man with ample evidence that he's a crass, narcissistic, womanizing rich douchebag primarily concerned with himself and his family name. So yes, even this forum is a reflection of the Internet. Ranting crazies. A guy that posted an offensive photo of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. All types of beliefs represented good and bad. So yes, this place has elements you don't like...and more important, it is part of the Internet. Thus it is part of the huge mix of information and content available on this giant digital medium known as the Internet just like FB.

The rest of the stuff is exaggeration. It's the internet. not your life.

You might say that we as a "people" or we as a nation of consumers we "litigated" this more than a qtr. of a century ago. I don't remember the program on NOVA that RD spoke about but I am not surprised there were lots of programs like 20/20 or 60 minutes plus tons of written articles in Newsweek, TIME, Wall Street Journal, etc... It was all talked about, discussed, and yes debated but in the end we as a society mostly decided we would trade less privacy for more expediency in our lives.

That's why those movies and/or shows that use going "off the grid" as a plot are very popular. we have know for quite awhile that there were going to be consequences of this new technology, we just took the gamble that those in "authority" I.E. our elected officials would stay on top of things and make sure that these new high tech companies didn't stray out of line and if they did would be properly penalized and forced to comply. BTW, this is called REGULATION and yes, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and actually REGULATE certain industries that are vital to our existence as a FREE NATION.

It has been a FAILURE of our elected officials to do their JOBS that what happened with FB and other institutions that lately have been LEAKING our personal data like a busted water main!

The odd thing about this uproar is this: even if they *were* or he *was*, it doesn't f*cking matter. All it is is speech. It's not changing Trump votes to Hillary votes or vice versa in the ballot box- it's simply broadcasting their view, right or wrong, lying or not lying, and I'm sorry, but that's what the First Amendment guarantees.

No, burrton. FB and social media are forms of mind control. Trump is The Kremlin Candidate who successfully took the presidency after beating a wide Republican field and one of the most powerful Democratic political machines in recent memory because he's mind controlled by Russia. It's the first time in our history that a foreign government has interfered in our elections using propaganda and lies and money. The Democrats (likely encouraged by The Clintons and their allies) aren't fueling this investigation and the media propaganda as an act of revenge. This is all really happening like a movie. It's not just Americans being really easily manipulated by the media because they base most of their thinking on emotional reactions to various stimulus marketers, media, and campaigners know how to manipulate.

C'mon burrton, you aren't giving these forms of mind control enough credit.

I'm pretty much in agreement, except the part about lying being part of the 1st Amendment. You cannot run into a crowded building and yell "fire" knowing that there isn't one just so you can see everyone panic and run about like chickens with their heads cut off, nor can you intentionally tell lies about an individual as that would be considered slander and libel.

True, but libel (in the legal sense) is very narrowly defined, and the only carve-out for 'yelling fire in a crowded theater' type situations is that where you're causing immediate danger (also very narrowly defined, actually).

There are limits, as you allude to, but I can call you an @sshole every day and twice on Sundays even though I know you to be an august gentleman, and there's not a thing you can do about it (well, legally).

In fact, I think I'm going to start. ;)

I wasn't referring to name calling when referring to libel or slander. What I was referring to was an intentional misrepresentation of facts.

It's true that not a lot of people have been sued for libel or slander, but only because court costs and lawyer fees make the proposition a non starter.

It's true that not a lot of people have been sued for libel or slander, but only because court costs and lawyer fees make the proposition a non starter.

Again, true, but it's also (arguably more so) because it's a tall order to prove legally, and exponentially so against public figures.

And we know this intuitively- "FAKE NEWS" (and its left-wing analog) would lead to near-infinite numbers of suits being filed across the nation if "libel" were so flippant a charge to be filed, right?
