Craigslist Battles "Prostitution"

Postby Largent80 » Tue Mar 27, 2018 8:51 am

There probably are people that were using it for that, but it also affects people that actually met and had positive results like marriage happen. It doesn't affect me any but to me it's censorship and I'm against that.

From Craigslist

"US Congress just passed HR 1865, "FOSTA", seeking to subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties (users) misuse online personals unlawfully.

Any tool or service can be misused. We can't take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking craigslist personals offline. Hopefully we can bring them back some day.

To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness!"

I think prostitution should just be legalized and regulated like it is in Nevada. Safer for the girls and the customers and takes the criminal element out of consensual adult transactions so that authorities can focus their interdiction and incarnation efforts on the actual criminal elements of the issue like the under-aged and human trafficking.

As for censorship? Craigslist removed the personal ads of their own accord, they were not forced to. I don't really think passing a law pertaining to website liability for 3rd party misuse of a website is censorship ... I also don't think it'd withstand a legal challenge. We'll see when someone has the stones to challenge it (someone eventually will).

I don't have a problem with prostitution per se even as it relates to activity on Craigslist. But there have been a number of cases, including here in my home town, where Craigslist has been utilized by child rapists, so I can understand establishing some degree of 3rd party liability.

And L80, as far as you having met your wife on Craigslist, I, too, met my wife online. We met on Yahoo back in 2000 when it was free and online dating was relatively new. Nowadays it's better to pay the fee and sign up for a service like Match.com as it's less likely to be targeted by scammers or other undesirables as a free service like Craigslist.

I did NOT meet my wife on Craigslist and I never said that. We actually me on Plenty of Fish back in 2010. Happily married for 6 years now.

I am in the prostitution camp. Allow it. It's a normal human function to want sex and to bust people for that is WRONG.

When it comes to activity that is outside of the norm like pedophilia cm'on man, get rid of it. I'm not a fan of this Craigslist ban. It smacks of telling people what they can or cannot do.

Dammit...sorry about that, L80. I don't know how I got that impression. You have my humble apologies, and congrats on your being happily married!

As I understand the bill, it does not ban any aspect of Craigslist. What it is doing is establishing penalties for websites that promote or facilitate prostution and other crimes. It's holding them accountable. Craigslist is voluntarily pulling their personals section.

I am for regulated prostitution such as they have in Nevada and a few other foreign countries, but not the type of unregulated prostitution that was happening on Craigslist, which included children and human trafficing. Being a free website, Craigslist probably doesn't have the resources to police the traffic in their personals sections, so they decided to shut it down, or at least that's my guess as to why they made that decision.

I think this bill was supposed to be targeted to a rag that calls its self the Back Page I believe. They have been running ads for under age prostitution for years while claiming they didn't and have been hiding behind the 1st. Amendment for years. I think Craigslist is just playing it safe at the moment, a knee jerk reaction maybe.

I would never use craigslist because too many people have been robbed and/or murdered just because they bought or sold something on craigslist. I don't do ebay for the same reason. Oh, and I dumped Fbook years ago because they were too intrusive. They wanted info they just had no business even asking for, but, so many out there just STUPIDLY didn't think and just gave it up to them.

While some people dream of cutting the cord, I dream about going off the grid.

Legalization of prostitution is a long time coming. I think it's a bad profession, but free women (and I guess men to a lesser degree) should be able to do what they want with their bodies. I always see women battling for abortion, but don't seem to care about prostitution which is control over their body as well.

I don't think I've ever heard prostitution termed as "control over their own bodies". Laws requiring that you not urinate in public is controling your body.

Prostitution and women's rights are two completely different subjects and women are wise not to make it a part of their agenda. Most women despise prostitutes (at least the vast majority of the women I've associated with), can't stand men that patronize them, and their movement would loose support if they attempted to link the two.

What would you consider someone telling you that you can't have sex with someone for money as an adult or you'll pay a huge fine or go to jail? Is that control over your body or not?

It is still control over their bodies. If they want charge someone money for screwing them, they should be able to. It's their body, what they do with it is up to them. It's basically saying we decided you can't allow someone to have to sex with for money unless you're in porn of course since that is classified as entertainment. It's just another one of those strange lines in America with all types of loopholes that creates a crime that should not exist. Get rid of prostitution as a crime. If women or men want to earn money having sex with their bodies, that's their business. Get rid of the pimps, make testing good, and make it a regulated and taxed business.

I guess you can look at it that way, but there's all sorts of examples of people not being able to do certain things with their bodies. If you're under 21, you can't put alcohol into it, can't put controlled substances into it, can't commit suicide (legally), and so on. I just don't think you've chosen a good analogy, but so be it. I'm in basic agreement with your premise, so we're arguing over semantics.

I do agree that prostitution should be legal, but that it should be state regulated. Otherwise, there's just too many other bad things associated with it, including health issues, organized crime, human trafficing, etc. It would also give citizens some control over where those businesses or activities can exist, how they can advertize, etc.
