removing a frick'n .dll virus

Postby rottweiler » Thu Mar 20, 2014 11:26 am

Dammit. I knew there was a reason I've always hated those frick'n .pdf files.

I opened one up a coupla weeks ago, and my unit ain't been the same since. Every time I click on Internet Explorer, the first extension that pops up is this "reframe.dll" bullcrap, and eventually/ finally (i.e. on a good day), the Google home page appears.

I know there are some very smart techno-geeks among us here who can help me out with this.

I've done a Google search for "how to remove a .dll virus" a coupla times; but alas, I either don't speak geek well enough to have a frick'n clue how to follow the steps the sites that I've found tell me to do in order to remove the virus, or just don't trust them in general.

Please—if there's anyone here who doesn't mind speaking "Geek for Idiots"—help me out so I can remove this damned thing.

Thanks.

Safe to assume you've run a good anti-virus scanner (Avira, Avast, AVG, etc) *and* Malwarebytes' program?

Apparently a .dll virus acquired through reading a file in Adobe can beat them.

Fk Malwarebytes, bro.

Got to pay for that removal service.

I'm lookin' for a cheaper short-cut.

And I have that McAfee Virus Shield crap. Apparently, it's not as good as it claims itself to be.

Fk them.

Fk Malwarebytes.

Fk nerds who make computer virii.

Fk the WORLD, pretty much!!!

You don't need the "pro" (pay) version, Rott:

https://www.malwarebytes.org/

Go here and follow the directions- it's specific to BitGuard but it should work on any DLL virus and I *think* all the tools are free:

http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-bitguard-exe-virus/

And yeah, McAfee is crap. Get either AVG, Avira, or Avast (one of those is free)- any of them consistently rate near the top of various AV tests I've seen.

Fk Malwarebytes.

Er, they're on your side, Rott. The Pro version does other stuff you don't need right now.

Yeah I'm not real tech savvy myself but at work we've got a dedicated T1 line with it's own fire walls (which are supposed to be nearly impregnable, being that we're an Electric Utility) with Symantec end user AV and the IT guys still run the free version of Malwarebytes to hunt down and remove any nuisances that make it past our security to our individual desktops (of which I have 6 at my plant).

I have had great luck with Avast that is free.
But then I have an Apple. Its LInux based, so while we are prone to viruses its not as dangerous as owning a laptop.

I fixed it — via the help of a YouTube video. Threat eliminated.

Thanks to everyone here for the suggestions.

For future reference (and curiosity) what ended up doing the trick, Rott?

I meant what did you do to get *rid* of the problem, not to contract it.

Just deleted the EXE... interesting. Didn't know it could be such a simple fix. Ok, then- thanks for the info, Rott.
