Getting ready for a major disaster here in SE Texas.

UGH, we're prepared but this is going to be ugly.

In addition to the risk of human life, this thing could make for a short term economic disaster. Better fill up your gas tank now as prices are likely to go through the ceiling for a few months.

We have been getting ready for a week so we're prepared. I have a generator, 25 gallons of gas, I just made 20 pounds of smoked beef jerky and 10 of smoked sockeye salmon. Both cars are filled, $1,000 in cash, 30 gallons of water and a First Need filter (if needed). We're set and we are out of the flood plain, it's just that all the tributaries flood in an event like this and when the power goes out, it can stay out a long time.

We are not in an evacuation zone.

You sound more prepared than most and a lot of people forget about having cash on hand as we are so used to using plastic (or now phones in some areas).
Good luck to you.

The LAST thing I am worried about is gas prices as we already have the best gas prices in the U.S.

Just getting my horses into the barn and settling them down now. I have 3.

We are going to be alright, but a LOT of folks are going to lose everything. This is a catastrophe for many people and it is just getting started.

Woke up, so we're still alive !!!!

Watching TV and it is a lot better as far as damage is concerned in Rockport where the storm came onshore.

The problem where we live is that we are on the side of the storm that has huge feeder bands of rain. I let my horses out of the barn and they are having a blast running through my pasture (5 acres).

I think we lucked out a little bit with the storm.

Geez what a day. 3 tornado warnings (one extreme) tornado on the ground 20 miles from me. Going to be a rough week ahead.

I was watching the eye approach Rockport last night and they showed 4 guys that sleep on their boats in the harbor who planned on "riding it out". Category 4 hurricane. 1 of the guys had just moved there from the NW and I looked at my wife and said, these guys will never be seen again. They can't even get in there to see the damage yet.

Our power is out right now, but we have a generator. The forecast is slightly improving but we are far from out of the woods with this storm.

Horses are diggin it, dog, not so much, cat is cranky. We're not going to be able to work for at least a week.

Pretty amazing to see people helping people here in Houston. Still raining here, we're dry but are stuck as all the roads around us are flooded.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the date of the event, not the date of the claim being filed, determine which laws apply?

I honestly don't know, but I wouldn't have thought there was *any* way it worked the way you describe.

[edit]

Nope, you're correct- unbelievable. Some people are still swimming for their lives, @ssholes.

They are saying on the news here that the deadline will be pushed back because so many people can'te ven get assessments on their property. They are in shelters. The sun came out yesterday afternoon thank God.

I heard where there are tens of thousands in the Houston area that didn't carry flood insurance so they're S.O.L. What an awful lesson to have to learn the hard way.

The sad part is many homes were built in areas that have NEVER flooded. Who would pay huge premiums for what had never happened even with two gigantic storms in the last 2 years?

We were smart enough to buy away from creeks and especially rivers. Hard for me to believe that people would actually buy a house at the base of a resovoir.

We haven't done an assessment yet, but I think everything is ok. Even though we got more rain than I have ever see, it fell over a period of days. Last year we go 16" in about 8 hours and may pasture became a river, fortunatly the water took a right at my barn.

I have family in both Texas (Dallas) and Florida. The were predicting that Irma would go right up the spine of the state, now that would have been right through where many of my family members live, but they are more than 75-100 miles from Naples. The beaches of Naples have the softest white sand and the water of the Gulf is 80-84 degrees, very pleasant. Anyway, they have sheltered at the high school in LaBelle. Accept for various cousins and uncles who will stay with the animals, both pets and live stock. They have been through this many times, they know what to do. Everybody looks after one another and their neighbors. It is just like in Mayberry, everyone knows everyone and his brother.
