So this guy is basically writing a clickbait article questioning whether the Seahawks should throw away their competitiveness because of how easy it is to find QBs in the draft.

Yea, slow news day. Outside of the Olympics, there's nothing at all going on in the sporting world, so why not write a provocative article and pick up a few readers?

I was a little surprised to hear that Pete was upset with Russell's play during the last game vs. the Cards. Anyone have any insights as to what the issue(s) might have been?

Pete can only blame himself for letting the OL degrade to the point that Wilson had to be both RB and QB.
That being said, as an exercise, if they are considering trading him, they might get a high 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. With that haul, they would still require a very mobile QB perhaps like Lamar Jackson or maybe even Baker Mayfield.
I don't know if either will reach the point of play that Wilson has, but there aren't many QBs that could survive behind our OL of the last few years.

One thing I noticed was that RW has definitely lost a step when he is scrambling around. He is getting caught from behind in situations that he used to accelerate out of. Wilson has also had "holes" that only someone with his speed could take advantage of before they closed now sees these same "holes" close up on him stopping him for either a short gain or even a yardage loss. Before he had that season of playing hurt he used to be able to take advantage of situations that he can no longer take advantage of. Combine that with an inexperienced leaky O-Line and anyone can see and understand why our offense has been so ineffective the past 3 seasons.

I don't think he's lost a step, I think he's consciously trying to be more of a pocket passer and trying to control his impulse to start scrambling int he first place.

No way we trade him but if we did it would be at least two firsts.

I wonder how many teams have traded their franchise QB without a proven replacement and improved? That would be interesting to hear. Off the top of my head I can't think of any.

I think he's lost a step, straight line at least, even he admitted it coming in to the season, scrambling wise, I don't feel that's the case. He's as agile and nimble as he's always been, just don't think defenses bite as often on his spins and moves.....

3 yrs ago, he ran away from everyone when he escaped, now it's less escapes, and slight lack of speed limiting the damage done is all. It's to be expected as players age.

Not many. Both the Packers and 49'ers let theirs (Favre and Montana) walk and got better but both those guys were at the end of their careers as both were in their mid 30's and their teams had backups ready to go (Rodgers and Young).

Kansas City just traded their franchise QB, if you can call him a "franchise" QB, and are going with an unproven backup.

The Wilson trade talk is just silly. It's not going to happen, at least not in the near future unless Russell suddenly wants out or there's a regime change at the top.

I wouldn't call playing with a high ankle sprain and a strained MCL "losing a step"..

He gutted those injuries out, and in fact put on extra muscle for that season expecting to get pummelled again which he did.

He hasn't lost a step, absurd.

I don't know of many 29 year olds that don't lose a step, injuries or no injuries. It's one of the reasons why they talk about the wall that many if not most running backs hit when they turn 30.

That said, Russell is undeniably extremely effective at both running the ball and at eluding pass rushers, so any debate about his losing a step is a moot point. And as Cbob said, he's been trying to develop his game into more of a pocket passing one...if we'd ever give him a pocket to work from. As his career progresses, he's going to have to become less reliant on his legs, a fact that he undoubtedly recognizes.

I bought a step back at the I lost a step.com store.

RW doesn't need to because he hasn't, there is no debate.

Bulking up the way he did in order to take the hits he does was bound to make him lose a step. How many body builders do you know can sprint like a thin man? The loss of speed is gradual as the bulk goes on and he has slightly slowed due to both age and I think, bulking up.

Actually RW lost weight going into last season, but gained muscle. He was much leaner. He went from 225-230 and 16% body fat two years ago to 214-215 and 10% body fat before this season. He also felt that he was faster going into this season.

I didn't say he got fat or skinny. I said he bulked up which you acknowledged in your reply of him gaining muscle. Runners are not bulked up. 230 is definitely too big for his height. 215 is good if he's going to be taking hits. 205 is good if he wants to be a scrambler.

When you were talking about bulking up, I interpreted that to you saying he ‘got bigger’ and you said his bulking up slowed him down. I was saying that in fact his bulking up didn’t make him slower as he actually lost weight. How would ‘bulking up’ by losing weight make him slower? Basically I was just throwing out there the fact that he weighed less and therefore probably hasn’t lost a step

Let us know when y'all win a playoff game in this decade, until then we'll gladly keep laughing at you....

By the way, nice idea trading Quinn for a bag of peanuts, I'm sure that won't cause any problems trying to keep Wilson from having more success. Lmao

I am glad to see that I am not the only poster who perceives Wilson having lost a step. I know, the story out of the VMAC is that he is looking down field more trying to become more of a pocket passer and that is why he is less effective scrambling than he was his first 3 seasons.

One thing that I have ALWAYS admired about RW was that even as a rookie he kept his eyes down field looking to make a play with his arm rather than his feet. He IS more effective doing that now and I think he would be a great "pocket" passer if he had a decent O-Line blocking. I don't know WHY he has lost a step I just know that he has. I don't know if it was his playing hurt all of the 2016-2017 season or that he has bulked up to such an extent that it has cost him foot speed or a combination of factors. One thing I don't chalk it up to is age, losing a step at his age is not normal.

I'm not sure he has lost a step. He may have, but it might also look like that because he was the only running threat we had and teams could focus on limiting him more than if we had an effective run game.

Russell never did have blazing, off the charts speed. His time in the 40 was 4.55, which is very good for a quarterback but nothing that really set him apart from his peers. Robert Griffin had a 4.41, Colin Kaepernick at 6'5" ran a 4.53, Cam Newton at 6'5" and 248 pounds ran a 4.58, just to name a few. If he has lost a step, it's not a very big one. He's still extremely effective at running the ball when he has to.
