They trade him, it's full rebuild, might as well dump em all at that point, Wagner, Baldwin etc. Wilson can't carry a team alone, at this point, feels like they following GB model, handful of big name players on D , a franchise QB and a whole lot of nothing else.

Even if we blow up the entire team, Wagner is one of just two guys that I'd want to keep, the other being Russell. At least then you'd have the quarterbacks of both offense and defense to build around.

Judging by all the actions being taken so far during the offseason, it would appear to me that Pete has decided to stick it out for another few years. It's looking a lot like a 2 or 3 year rebuild, and I'm not sure why anyone would want to stick around if they didn't intend to see it through.

Problem is, Wilson, isn't Rodgers, he doesn't elevate the players around him ( at least not to date). Truthfully I'm not particularly interested in making the playoffs most years, but not having enough to get to and win a sb.... like ordering filet mignon and get a hamburger patty.

You never know. I won't jump in your camp as long as we have Russell and Pete's expertise on defense. If they trade Earl (which would be stupid), they better not miss rebuilding the run game. The only thing that will hide a weak secondary in the current NFL is a strong run game that eats clock and grinds yards keeping the opposing offense off the field.

Curtis Crabtree of KJR is reporting Deshawn Shead will be released on Monday.
They must really like who they drafted last year an like what they see in the draft this year.

Schefter reporting Sherm's agreed to a 3-year deal with the Niners.

The fcking *Niners*. Well, here's hoping his achilles injury is the death knell of his career.

Ok, so do I interpret all this dissing of Sherman to mean I was accurate in my reasons to dislike him? Cause I really still do not. But I want to give gim a fair shake. What can you guys tell me about what you know of him, given you see more local interviews and exposure of him than the rest of us have.

LOL! Doesn't take anymore than a change of uniform color, does it? You had about as much respect for Sherman as we did for Krapperdick.

Richard Sherman is an extremely intelligent player, perhaps one of the smartest, most savvy player in the league. If it wasn't for his over inflated ego, not at all unique in the world of NFL football, he'd be one helluva great guy.

But he's damaged goods. I have a feeling that the Hawks had some inside knowledge on his recovery from Achilles surgery.

Not sure what you mean. I don't really like him. I in fact just posted that in the comment you replied to. When he comes to my team, and he can help, what am I suppose to say? I don't want him cause he's a jerk? LOL. Well, part of that is true. I'm actually more on that side of the fence. But it's a business and he can help our team. So as someone who roots for the team, I figure I should at least learn about the players we sign.

He's a good player and will be for the next year or year and a half. Too bad the refs in the NFL have it in for him though. He'll get every ticky tack PI called against him for the rest of his career. If you have 3rd and 20+ just go after RS and draw the PI for a first down.

That plus his age is way too much money for 3 years. I'm glad he's drawing money away from other positions on your team though. I believe the best teams in the league will be those that have QBs on their first contract and can afford to pay talented young players who are also on their first contracts. The only reason that the Pats have been in the SB the last few years is because Brady reduced his contract to about $17M so he could have supporting players around him.

When you bloat your roster with 6 or 7 players who take up 70%+ of your cap, you are doomed for failure.

I don't know his contract and I generally don't pay attention to the ins and outs of them, but it is reportedly heavy on incentives. So I am thinking if he hits every mark and earns it, then it's worth it. If he falls short then he'll likely be paid his true worth under the terms of the contract. So, after thinking about it, I am all in on it. He knows the ins and outs of study, technique etc, so I think at the very worst he'll be a "decent"to solid cover guy. I expect him to compete hard, make his typical instinctual plays and come up and support on the run. That'll be good enough for me. Not expecting anything close to a "lockdown" corner. That's an upgrade over what we had last year, which was flat out bad play.

I found John Lynch's opening comments interesting. He focused primarily on RS' leadership and mentoring of our young secondary. And then the last sentence almost seemed like an afterthought that "he's also one of the best corners in the game [paraphrase]". Reading between the lines it sounds like they think his main value is in teaching, leading and mentoring. I hope he's much more than that, but I'll bet the contract reflects Lynch's statements.

The second surgery wasn't an Achillies repair. All they did was clean up some bone spurs. The only thing that has to heal on the 2nd surgery is a 2" scar from the incision. But it did set back his recovery from the first surgery a bit.

Sherman is claiming that he'll be ready by training camp. With all the back peddling and changing of directions that defensive backs have to do, I have my doubts that he can come back 100%. Judging by the results of recent Achilles surgeries, the odds are against him...and he'll be celebrating his 30th birthday in two weeks.

His contract with the Niners is loaded with incentives, so it's a low risk, high reward situation for them not to mention that it keeps him away from us in case he does fully recover, so I can see their logic. I'm not too worried about this one coming back to haunt us.

River;

I think you are right about his production. That’s about what I am expecting. Maybe a season similar to Bowman’s after returning from injury. Not the same player, but still productive.

It seems Sherman was the 49ers 2nd choice after Talib said he wouldn't play for SF.
From the latest PFT article regarding Shermans contract, it seems it isn't much of a gamble for SF as they have a lot of outs and he has to make post season honors this year to guarantee money for next year.

DeShawn Shead is visiting the Lions and 49ers, too so we could lose him as well.
He's got some good versatility that we might be able to use if we get him back.

This to me, is the biggest thing I will miss from RS. As good a corner as he is/was, you would still come up and stick a RB on his side. That is rare with DBs especially lock down DBs.

Well, I'm going to miss how teams passed just to one side of the field. To me, that was Sherman's biggest contribution. Teams game planned around him.

But you're right about his supporting the run defense. As great of a cover corner that Deion Sanders was, he was a chicken chit and completely worthless when it came to supporting the run defense. Sherman has always been fearless when it came to coming up to make a tackle or take on blockers.
