Hawkshack Pick'em League

Postby RiverDog » Fri Aug 10, 2018 8:22 am

I received an email asking me to join, but I'm apparently already registered. I checked the standings tab and it seems that C-Bob and Your Truly are the only two contestants so far. It would sure be nice to have a few more participants. I like it better than fantasy football as it's easier to manage and track and keeps me interested in every contest no matter where the teams are in the standings.

Cbob, are you still going to act as commissioner?

You got that email because i was setting up the league for this year and it automatically included and emailed last year's contestants. It kinda jumped the gun on me ... I'll finish setting it and the survival league up soon.

The Group ID# is 10144, the password is Seahawkswin (long time posters will remember him) ... if you have any trouble message me your email and I'll send you an invitation.

Now I'll work on the survival pool ...

We might also add that the league is through Yahoo's Pro Football Fantsay Sports:

I thought I'd bump this thread to see if we could get a few more participants or if you're already in, to remember to make your picks by this Thursday's season opener. In some ways, this is better than fantasy football as it keeps you interested in the result of every game.

Come on, Sis!

Sorry for not posting a status update last week, I was travelling for a conference at the Mohegan Sun and frankly had better things to do.

After two weeks Curmudgeon leads both the pools, straight up with a 19-11 mark (Riv is second at 18-12) and Confidence points at 168 (ObS is second at 160).

I'm the only one that doesn't have a strike yet in the Survival Pool, evidently all y'all went with the Saints in week one to get your one strike.

After week 3 Curmudgeon still leads both Pick'em pools, straight up at 28-18 mark (Riv and I are tied at second 1 game back) and Confidence points at 236 with ObS in second at 230.

I won the survival pool already even though I got my first strike this week ... week three is about as short a survival pool as I've seen.

Next season we should have a separate contest regarding the outcome of the Seahawks game. Last year, I picked it correctly about 75% of the time and this season I'm off to a perfect 3-0.

But I don't want to talk about the survivor league. Ugh.

After 4 weeks it's still Curmudgeon ahead in both Pick'em pools, 39-22 straight up, one game ahead of me (with Riv 2 games back) and with 330 Confidence points to my 327 (with ObS 10 points behind me).

After a good week (for me) I find myself ahead in both pick'em pools: straight up I'm at 49-27 with curmudgeon 2 games back at 47-29. In confidence points I lead curmudgeon again 422 to 405.

Don't like posting updates while I'm leading (feels too much like bragging) but this fell of the front page so I figured I better get on it:

I'm still ahead in both pools, 69-36 straight up with curmudgeon 2 games back at 67-38. In confidence points I lead ObS 599 to 578.

In order to save our friend Cbob from the embarrassment of giving us an update while leading our pick'em league, I thought I'd do him a favor and take over his task this week.

Following Week 8, or roughly halfway through the season, Cbob continues to lead in confidence points with a healthy 18 point margin over 2nd place ObS and in the won/loss contest, sporting a 3 game lead over his nearest rival River Dog.

I really shouldn't make Riv do this for me every week so here until ya'll catch me it just is what it is ...

After week nine I widened my leads just a bit in both the confidence points: 767 to 747 (Boeing anyone?) over ObS and straight up at 90-42 with Riv and curmudgeon sharing second at 85-47.

Good luck this week!

If Cbob has this kind of a lead going into the playoffs, then he would be difficult to overcome as the number of available points goes way down and the number of games goes from 13-16 a week to 4. But the season is barely half over, and that 20 point lead could evaporate quickly when you consider that one game could represent as much as 16 points.

You should have signed up. I prefer this over fantasy football as it keeps your interest in every game.

You are probably right about me signing up. I don't understand it at all. I try to steer away from anything that could dilute my homerism from my team. E.g. fantasy football. Never played it, never will. This may be different and next year I'll try and find information on how it is played. As long as I don't root for any other team or player on another team, I'll participate. (I don't mind picking winners of games where neither team is a Seahawk team because if you like football you have an inkling of how good/bad other teams are. That's different to me).

I have a little different philosphy regarding betting for or against the Seahawks. If I bet $50 on the Hawks to lose and they lose, it's like getting a $50 consolation prize. If I bet against them and they win, then our winning it takes the pain out of losing $50.

The pick-um league is very simple and doesn't require a lot of time and research compared to fantasy football, and like I said, it holds your interest in every game. Otherwise, why else would anyone in their right mind be riveted to the TV set watching the Niners and Raiders?

I have a friend that has this exact same philosophy. Betting against the Hawks seemed like blasphemy to me, until he explained it as you did. It's a win/win situation in a weird sort of way.

So long as the betting line is close, either even or a 1 or 2 point underdog. If there's too big of a point spread, the chances are greater that the Hawks could cover the point spread yet still lose the game.

For example, I would not want to place a bet on us to lose this week's game with the Rams as the betting line is around 5.5 to 6 points. If the game were to end with a score like our previous contest, you could find yourself in a lose/lose situation where the Hawks lost and you still lose your $50 bet.

Apologies for tooting my own horn here (this one is blatant) but for the first time this year I'm ahead of every one on the NFL "experts"!

Pickwatch tracks "all the experts from ESPN, CBS, Profootballfocus and more and compare them for accuracy!" and I check in each week to see where our own Hawkshack experts stand, we're usually top 5 or 10 but this time we're numero uno! Just thought it was pretty cool ...

This week I'm 132-58 to curmudgeon's 121-69 (the best at Pickwatch is 3 tied at 129 correct). In confidence points it's 1107 with curmudgeon and ObS tied at 1047 for second.

Good luck!

Curmudgeon closes the gap after winning the week* straight up (10-6) and tying with me for first in confidence points (81).

Overall straight up it's:
Me: 140-66
Curm: 131-75
ObS: 129-77
BOE (Best of the Experts): 140-66

Confience points:
Me: 1188
Curm: 1128
Obs: 1120

Good luck this week!

* Don't know why I haven't been, but I'm gonna start posting weekly winners as well as overall going forward.

Not much chance of winning the season but go to Yahoo fantasy sports and see if you can still join to get in on the weekly; the Group ID# is 10144 and the password is Seahawkswin

Here's the link:

https://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/pickem

In the center of the page, click on the blue bar that says "Join A Group" and use the information Cbob provided.

It's free, and there's still 3 weeks left in the season plus the playoffs, so you can use what's left in this season to get used to the format. I hope you join, it's really a lot of fun, keeps your interest in all the games each and every week.
