Falcons - 49ers Wild Finish

Postby jshawaii22 » Sun Dec 15, 2019 5:36 pm

We back our way into the division lead with more then 1/2 our Defense hurt or sick -- simple wild end to the 49ers game. Two game deciding reviews in the last 8 seconds... what a fun year the NFL is.

Oh, and while that was happening the RAMS are almost OUT of the playoffs for this year.

Realistically the Niners loss doesn't mean much to us unless they lose next week, too. We're still going to have to beat them to win the division.

I've been keeping an eye on our strength of victory as it's possible we could lose to the Niners and tie for the division. The two teams that we played that the Niners didn't (Vikings and Eagles) both won while the two that the Niners beat went 1-1 (Packers and Redskins).

The Rams are on life support. They need the Vikings to lose their last two at home while winning out. However, Dalvin Cook left the Chargers game early with an apparent shoulder injury, so who knows. Next week is going to have some games of interest to us, with the Niners vs. Rams and Packers vs. Vikings.

Now let's root for the Saints to lose tomorrow night!

OK RD,

Break out your tie-breaker machine and tell all of us if there are 3 - 4 teams all tied for the top mark with 3 - 4 losses, then head-to-head is out and what comes next?

Seahawks - 49ers - Saints - Packers all can tie with 3 teams winning divisions and either the Seahawks / 49ers being the #1 wildcard.

What about Seahawks - 49ers since we each have one win if we tie?

I think we need to root for the Rams next week, that's for sure.

Backing into the playoffs (or playoff placement as the case may be) is getting the position even while losing. We didn't lose, we didn't back into anything.

We control our fate. We can get a bye. It's under our control. Our guys just need to step up and make it happen.

Sorry -- but when the Rams lost, we backed in... of course, it was by winning our game.

How do you back in as a team that won 11 games and can win the 1st or 2nd seed? That is not what that term means.

We just secured a spot in the playoffs because the team that possibly could of beat us out of the playoffs just lost three hours after we won. It doesn't matter, at this point that we're 11-3. it's all how you look at it. Glass half full or empty.

Didn't mean no harm by it. I think being #1 in the NFC, if only potentially for 24 hours, is damn good for this team.

If we win out and tie with the Saints and Packers, the tiebreaker would go to best winning percentage against common opponents. There are only two teams where all 3 of us would have faced in common...the Panthers and Niners. We would be 3-0 in those games while both the Saints and the Packers will have lost one, both to the Niners, so we'd get HFA.

If the Niners lose next week to the Rams but beat us in Week 17, we'll have split the season series, have the same division record, the same conference record, and the same record against common opponents, so it would go to strength of victory. The two teams we played that the Niners didn't are the Eagles and Vikings while the Niners played the Packers and Redskins. As it stands today, we would own that tiebreaker.

Clear as mud?

I agree, that was a poor choice of terms. "Backing in", in my opinion, occurs when you lose yet secure your objective. We won today and as a result, secured a playoff berth. That's not backing in.

No big deal. Just seems like the Rams would have been the ones backing in had we lost and they lost or something like that. Seahawks really been pushing hard to be in a real playoff run this year. Best chance we've had in years to go to the big game. I hope they can step up and do the job.
