Athlon NFL player rankings

Postby Anthony » Thu Jul 10, 2014 8:33 pm

So Athlon put out their NFL player rankings for 2014 form their Pro Football Preview

RW was ranked as the #6 QB behind Rivers, Manning, Brady, Brees and Rodgers and ahead of Luck. Cap was 13th

Lynch was 4th behind Peterson, McCoy, and Charles

They only other positions I would find were Lineman, WR, TE. So I guess we have to wait till the issue comes out for the rest, however I heard them talk about it on KJR and they said ET was #1 at safety, Kam 11, and Sherman was #1 at CB

I'm comfortable with both those rankings, much more so than the players list.

Is Kam ranked 11th amongst safeties? If so I would still say he is ranked to low. Kam is one hell of a football player, and brings a complete package, top to bottom.

I read the QB rankings in the link and I'm beginning to think Manning is over hyped and not deserving of the #1 status.
Considering he has only been in one Offense and brought his Indianapolis Offense to Denver where they stacked the team with WR talent, his stats should have been astronomical.
Brady has had a lesser supporting cast, yet he's won more Super Bowls and Rodgers has the mobility factor along with strong decision making to in my mind make him a better QB than Manning at this point.

There was a time when Manning was clearly the best QB in the league, and he's still very good - a sure fire 1st ballot HoF, but I think he has slipped enough since his injury to not be the #1 QB today.

I am not going to argue that one NH, but what about Brees?? IF our guy wins one more SB don't you think he leapfrogs DB?

I would think he moves ahead of Bree's, but I think most of the media wants to see him pass for around 4500+ yards before they move him higher.

Agreed but I think just 4k would do it. Might even happen this year who knows.

I really do believe a healthy Harvin paired with Richardson, and year more experienced Kearse along with Norwood/Rice ( whichever wins that spot) is going to provide an additional chunk of yardage, and Td's. I'm really not sure how they couldn't.....

My prediction for Wilson this year:

4,102 yards

34 Td's

12 Ints

387 yards rushing

3 Td's

I really am EXPECTING this offense to be a top 5-7 offense in the NFL, and honestly that is why I'm so optomistic that this team can indeed repeat. We have not seen the best of this QB, offense or team, which is crazy.

ET is the best free safety in the game, and deserves to be #1, but Kam is EASILY the Seahawks most consistently underrated player. With all the media attention, and all the accolades going to Earl and Sherman, people consistently overlook Chancellor, a player who none other than Ronnie Lott himself called, "the best safety in football".

Are you freaking kidding me. Brees is a first ballot HOFer no question and is still at the top of his game. Holds several NFL records. Has never used his legs for anything, learned to play the position with his brain and his arm. RW is very promising and has done some great things, but he is not QBing on that level. Even Drew Brees of 2003 was not Drew Brees of now. It takes yrs to master the position the way he has.

I'd drop Manning about 4 or 5 slots in the QB rankings. Otherwise, I think they're well reasoned. Russell's being at #6 is fair and about where I would him for these types of purposes, but for our specific team, he's #1.

I didn't go over the other positions.

Pretty sure this isn't a career ranking, as always this is based on this upcoming season. Big difference there. That would be like me bitching that Rice was ranked ahead of Largent at the end of Largents career " a first ballot HOF player with every record in the book".... yet I'm fairly confident he would have been, you have any doubts? and honestly this is as always pure speculationn and filler. You rank Brees where ever you feel like, someone else ranks Wilson where they want, no one is wrong, as it is just a feeling and nothing more.

To be fair here, Wilson has indeed outplayed Brees in every game he has ever been in the game with him ( doesn't mean he is on that level IMHO, but for some people it does).

If you read the write-ups, it's pretty clear that the ranking doesn't consider past achievements and is only about who's best at this particular point in time, and as such, even though I don't agree with him, Obi has considerable justification for rating Wilson above Brees, including the fact that Wilson beat Brees twice and that Wilson is the reigning SB champ.

Thats great Brees is a HOF but that is based on a career this is based on now, and you are still wasting our time you troll.

I suppose I can handle Wilson ranked #6. But with some of these fossils on top of the heap wheres the beef honestly? Peyton Manning? Like Irsay said star wars numbers but only one championship. And I might add numerous playoff flame-outs including a few at home with HFA. I dont care if the guy throws 70 TD passes he is a postseason CHOKER. Brady? hes 6 points and some illegal film from no Super bowl titles. Oh forgot the tuck rule. He hasn't won a Super Bowl in 10 seasons. Rivers? Love the guy but not even a SB appearance with loaded teams for years.
I wouldn't trade our guy for anyone in the league including neck beard. I think he may wind up being one of the best of all time.
