Concern: Left Side, PAT/FG Attempts

Postby SalmonBB » Sat Jan 10, 2015 9:54 pm

Anyone else notice the lack of protection on the left side during PAT and field goal attempts? I've noticed this the past 3-4 games, and tonight Carolina almost got to the ball. Not that it would have made a significant difference in the game, but I'm concerned about getting one blocked in a future game when it really counts most. I would think that the coaching staff has noticed this, but it keeps happening. I wonder if they only review PAT/FG tape when they miss, because without exception, I've seen it occur every time, with the ball escaping just in time.

Awesome win tonight.

Yea - our ST's have been a bit shaky this season, really.

Coverage units are good, but punts and FG attempts, here and there, have been sloppy at times.

IMO, the key is for Hauschka to just remain focused.

He had a tough outing a couple weeks ago, but should be solid for the playoffs.

Always good to see you, SBB!

Thanks, Zorn.

Yeah, I like a lot of the things we're doing on special teams (e.g., the jump over the line by Kam!), but those PAT/FG attempts are missing a fundamental element - namely someone lined up on the left side to keep the defenders from speeding in. Even if the opponent doesn't get a hand on the ball, I believe this may be affecting Hauschka's focus. Coach Carroll seems to be rolling the dice a lot more in favor of 4th down conversions or punts now when we are on the edge of FG range ... as if we've lost faith in Hauschka to kick the long ones. I wonder if this is a side effect of not protecting that left flank. I may be reading too much into this, but what seems apparent regardless is that the left side remains unprotected and if uncorrected, I think we'll see a blocked kick sooner than later.
