What about Russ?

Postby Hawktawk » Sat Mar 14, 2015 3:51 pm

I am very excited about the guys Seattle has retained and acquired this off season. But what about Russ? And Wags for that matter? I read an article that said RW "may have to wait". Would PC and JS really do that, expect him to play another year on a rookie deal? Would Russ incredibly be on board with something like that? I'm not a cap guru but common sense would dictate the money has to be drying up...Enlighten me here fellow shack dwellers....

There will be time between the Draft and the start of the season.
I think that's when the deals for others were finalized and they have been talking, from what I've heard.

I don't see Indy or Washington rushing to sign Luck or RGIII to extensions. Why give up the 4th (and 5th for them) year of controlled salary when you don't have to.,
Even Carolina hasn't extended Cam Newton yet, and he was the year before RW.

I see Wags getting his before Russell. If next year's cap goes up another 12m like this year, expect it a year from now. There's always the 'franchise' tag.

Earl Thomas didn't sign his extension until late April last season and Richard Sherman didn't sign his until early May. It seems clear that the team waits to offer extensions until at least after the bulk of the free agency period has run its course.

Are you serious? Luck and RGIII are the 1 and 2 pick as was Newton and are paid accordingly. Russ has outperformed all three of them on 3rd round money. We just handed top money to an already signed RB who is antisocial and grabs his junk on TV and we are going to tell the franchise darling to wait his turn? It just seems unusual.

Whar does outperform your comtract have to do with it? This is a salary cap management issue.

Outperforming a third round contract has everything to do with it. We are in much greater danger of losing Russ to FA because he's so underpaid. If we let him get to his FA year there's no motivation for him not to just play out the contract and let the bidding begin. The whole purpose of signing them as soon as they are eligible is to ensure they remain your asset (as well as staying ahead of the last step up in salary for their second contract).

Is managing this year's cap really more important than making sure Russ remains a Seahawk? I'm sure there are both schools of thought even withing the Seahawks organization, but IMO signing him this year is a no-brainer.

That said, we are months from this becoming a real concern.

Comments made by PC and JS have shown that they have been in talks with RW's agent, a tweet last week by somebody (softy maybe after speaking with PC) said they are probably further along than most people think. Now is the time to work on the draft and sign FA (and work on trades obviously). If we get towards Training Camp and nothing has been signed then I might start to think there could be an issue, but we aren't even close to that yet, besides we have 14 mil in salary cap room.

They have been talking to Russ and his agent since the day they were allowed to but it's a tricky contract and in the meantime the train don't stop. Relax.

I'm not even remotely worried. RW wants to be a Hawk and Hawk's brass wants RW. This will get done.
