C Stefen Wisniewski headed to Seattle for a visit. Seahawks dealt Max Unger yesterday as part of a trade. You might've heard about it.
10:43 PM - 11 Mar 2015

He might not be quite as good as Unger but he might be an upgrade at the position given his reliability. Kid's started every game he's played and has only missed 3 games as a pro. The Raiders should have never let him reach free agency, he's young and still improving and that's a solid building block type player.

I talked about him in another thread.
He's a few years younger than Max and has some more upside because of his youth.
I don't know if he ever played for Cable - if he did then they can get a good scouting report about him, but they have lots of tape if he didn't.

I like him coming in, hopefully signs before leaving the buildings. Seems like he's seeking a reasonable contract - 3M range. He comes from a football family - his Father and Grandfather each played in the league.

I guess the question is does he fit into Cables system.

Sounds promising, better than what we currently have on our roster. You think we can get him for a decent price or is there going to be a big market for him?

HATED his father... dirtiest player this side of Chuck Cecil. But when Unger was traded this was the first name I thought of in terms of available players.

Obviously this would be a good pick up but his cap number would have to be in the 3's or so for it to make sense, IMO.

It's only March.
That's waaayyy too early to talk Cap.
If they want someone bad enough, they can make it work - and we know others will be cut at some point, too.

I meant from the perspective that one of the reasons that we let Max go, accord to JS, was because of his cap hit (it was like 5.5) so to sign somebody else with an equal or higher cap hit wouldn't follow in line with that. At the same time there is no reason a good C shouldn't have a cap hit in the 3's in his first year of multi-year contract, I wouldn't say that is shopping at Walmart, that would put him in the top half of centers in the league. I had read somewhere (who knows how true any of the crap out there is) saying he was hoping to get 8 mil/yr which would make him one of the top 4 centers in the league.

I know they could do it, but IMO spending top money on a C isn't the smartest way to spend you cap. If you look at average salaries for C in the league only 3 of the top 14 paid centers teams made it to the playoffs last year, and one of those was the 7-9 Panthers. Not that it isn't an important position, but it doesn't seem to be a position to spend a lot of money on, IMO. Also, 3 mil for a center is paying them in the top half of the league.

Seriously, I like this guy, he can play. He's not Unger talent wise but maybe he'll actually manage to stay healthy. He's exactly the versatile type of player the Seahawks like for this offense, I'd bet just about anything we sign him.

They signed Hudson from the Chiefs to a 44 million dollar contract and I suppose they thought it was an upgrade.
They have a lot of cap room they have to fill, so money probably isn't much of an issue. Yet.

I hope they give Lewis the shot. After he got he chance, it took a couple of games, but by the 3rd game as the starter you wouldn't know it wasn't Unger.

Give him the whole offseason (and I'll bet some work with RW) and he'll be just fine. Sign LJP as the backup.

It wasn't just the cap hit it was the fact that his contract was going to be up after 2016 and his cap number would go up again at that time. From a strictly player value perspective it made sense to get a blue chip player for him now rather than having him walk out the door for nothing in two years or trade him for a low round draft pick next year.

Just saw an update yesterday on Wisniewski, who remains unsigned. The link provides a little insight as to why teams are being cautious about him.

Thanks for the update.

I still got him penciled in as our center next year.

I believe that's the same injury Okung has.
How bad it is would be the question for teams.
I wonder if it was to his ball handling arm or the other (don't know if he's left or right handed). If it was that arm, it might affect plays from the shotgun as well.
We saw Unger almost missing some of the time last year from the shotgun and his shoulder was supposedly healthy, but it might be even worse if the Center's shoulder is suspect.

Unger has always had problems with shotgun snaps. I can't believe that it was due to an injury.

Wisniewski signed a 1 year deal with the Jags, so he's off the market.

I wonder if there was some concern about his health because he only signed for 2.5 mil.

My guess is it was the highest amount in a short term contract so as to try to showcase his skills for next year's Free Agency.
If he's healthy all year, and plays well, he should get a longer term contract with a lot more money.
It's a bit of a gamble, but I suspect he thinks he's worth more than what was offered with any of the longer term deals he got this year.

He was asking $4, I think @ $2.5we'd have been in the running if we thought him healthy. I'm with mykc in wondering about med issues.
