If Kelly can rationalize a spot just for that function is up to him, but we'll see how it goes.
That would mean they would have to keep 3 QB's on their active roster as one of them is likely to be the injury prone Sam Bradford. That's been Tebow's problem ever since he was traded from the Broncos, which is that teams view him as one dimensional, a QB that can run but can't hit the broad side of a barn with his passes, and not many teams are willing to sacrifice a spot on their active roster for a package QB. The Jets had to utilize him as a blocker on the punt team in order to justify keeping him on the roster.
Stay tuned to the draft on Thursday. If Whisenhunt decides that Mariota doesn't fit his system and passes on him, he'll slide at least to the #6 spot where the Jets are sitting at as the Jags are going defense no matter what Tampa and Tennessee do, the Raiders already have a QB they're happy with, and the Skins just picked up RG3's option at $16M in 2016. The Jets have a lot of holes to fill and could be talked into trading down. That could put Mariota within Kelly's reach, and all this discussion about Tebow will be a moot point.
