It's hard to say what's going on with Metcalf, hence the title in the OP. He's not drawing the personal foul penalties like he used to. Why? Has he matured and become more disciplined? I sure hope that explains it. Or is it because he no longer has that fire in him?
There's a debate going on about that last interception as to whose fault it was, Metcalf or Geno. Metcalf had his back to the QB when Geno uncorked his pass, so I think it's pretty clear that he expected Metcalf to break his route off to the sideline. Geno was under some pressure as the pocket was getting pushed back into him and had to throw the ball off his back foot, but the pressure wasn't to the point where he had to get rid of the ball to avoid a sack.
I understand that Brock Huard laid the blame on both Geno and Metcalf. I'm not sure how he would know that as it's possible that it could be all on one or the other, but it's pretty obvious that the two weren't on the same page. It's pretty frustrating when two players that have played together as long as Geno and Metcalf have can't connect when the game was on the line.
To his credit, Smith took the blame himself:
Smith was asked to take a questioner through the final play. “Interception, man,” he said. “Anything you see that goes wrong, put it on me. Anything that don’t look right, put it on me.”Read more at:
