Gruden lights up Robert Griffin

LMAO that's been a long time coming. I get so sick and tired of these prima donna QBs that wont ever take responsibility for their play without dissing their teammates. And RG3 has been one of the worst offenders in spite of his 4-13 record the past 2 years. I give Jay Gruden lots of credit. He put that pompous ass in his place. And he sent Snyder a message too. I'm the boss till you say I'm not and Ill go but I'm done taking $#1+ from this poser.

What was everyone else's take? Was Gruden out of line?

CBob, it was similar to Peyton's "we had some protection issues", but worse. RG3 basically said that he can't play well unless the players around him play well, which sounds like he's making excuses for what was obviously poor QB play (I watched the game sitting next to a Redskins fan, TV was right next to Hawks-Chiefs). He's telling us that he can't carry his team as other 'elite' quarterbacks have done and that he's dependent on above par performances out of his teammates, which is utter nonsense. The press spun it as "throwing his teammates under the bus". Gruden essentially told him to worry about playing his own position. RG3 took to Twitter and tried to cover his tracks but didn't apologize for them, complained about the spin the press put on it.

All right, thanks, I just caught myself up with a few videos at ESPN and NFL.com ...

IMO both were speaking the truth and neither had any business saying those things in the press. That should have been a private conversation between Griffin and Gruden.

That's exactly what I thought, but once RG3 opened his cake hole, Gruden probably figured he needed to go public with his admonishment, not that I necessarily agree with that line of thinking. I was also disappointed in RG3's unapologetic tweet whining about his treatment by the press.

This isn't the first time that RG3 has stuck his foot in his mouth. The guy needs some PR lessons.

RGIII needed an attitude adjustment, a wake up call and Gruden delivered it. Ive seen HC's hem and haw or refuse to express confidence in their starter. But I have never heard such a complete analytical beat-down of a QBs performance in front of the press. Gruden was clearly furious and was going to make his point no matter the consequences. Many in the media and on this forum think Gruden was over the line. I think this was a unique situation where Gruden isn't going to sit around and die of a thousand cuts with a prima donna QB who is thick with the owner. And then of course Griffin goes right on twitter to excoriate those who"took part of my remarks out of context". Never mind blaming others has always been his MO. Ill be interested to see How RGIII and maybe more important the rest of the team responds because the 9ers are up next.

I don't see RG3 as a prima Dona, I think they gave up way too much to get him and he is a running Qb, not a qb that runs when he has to, and that is a vast difference. The pressure due to mounting expectations and injuries are taking there toll. That doesn't make him a bad guy. He is Jermarcus Russell, Vince Young, or Akili Smith. Running Qb's don't make it in the NFL.
3 things you look for: 1. Accurate arm 2. How tough is he 3. What is his leadership potential. But no,l they look for the speed, arm strength, and size. We wonder why we end up with the Jeff George's as bust, and Montana, Wilson, or Brady end up as gems in the later rounds.

I guess you've never seen Mike Ditka dress down a quarterback. He would have made Gruden look like Mr. Rogers. Ditka is the guy Mike Singletary learned his table manners from. I've also seen The Big Tuna be openly critical of some of his players.

I don't disagree with your sentiment. RG3 deserved a butt chewing. But if it were me in Gruden's position, I would have done my best to keep it in the locker room and out of the media. The Redskins have enough to worry about besides this very visible split between the HC and their star QB.

Not sure I would classify RGIII as their "star" QB at this point, dude is surrounded by weapons, has already destroyed one coach, and from what I can tell not to many people are interested in him starting on that team fan wise, media wise, and now maybe coaching wise. He has had a single "good" year, out of three, at what point does Snyder and Co just admit he wasn't worth what was surrendered and move on?

I used the term 'star' quite liberally. He's a star in that they spent a boat load of capital to acquire him.

BTW I spent last Sunday morning with a die hard Redskins fan. He was rooting passionately for his team as I was for the Hawks. But oddly enough, he was wearing Washington Nationals gear, not anything from the Skins. His reason was that he loved his team but hated Snyder, said he goes to numerous games at FedEx but won't buy a single thing except for the game ticket, his reason being that he wasn't going to give one more penny to Snyder while being careful not to go past the point of cutting off his nose to spite his face. He also can't stand RG3, felt the draft trade was typical Snyder going after big names instead of building a solid foundation like Pete Carroll has. Obviously he's just one fan, but I got the sense that there's a lot of dissent within that fan base.

While I do think RGIII cares about getting better moving forward, I'm just not sure he's gonna be able to do so. His style simply doesn't tranfer well to the NFL, and he could end up being a guy that's out of the league in 3 yrs due to injury anyway.

He's a decent kid, but his stock is rapidly dropping from blue chip to penny.

Terrible move Jay. Whether you chose him or not, his play is a reflection of your coaching. You basically broadcast to the world that you cannot coach a QB. And worse yet, when you give up you'll publicly trash him. In trying to distance himself from RGIII, Gruden only made himself look much worse to his next potential employer.

Today gruden tells CBS Sports that "the clock is ticking" on RG Triple Toothpicks.

sometimes selfish people need to be called out! I have no problem with this. Though it could have been kept in the locker room (it may have been until this).

I think Gruden is right in this case - the clock is ticking as he's now started 32 games in his career and nobody really knows how good he could be if any good at all.
RG III hasn't been the QB everyone expects. Maybe because of what they gave up and his draft position there is too much pressure on him.
Some former coaches said he doesn't put in enough time in the film room. And the injuries set him back, too.

If either is true, he can correct the off field effort but the pressure will remain as long as he's in Washington.
