One of the best interviews of how that draft went down that I've seen.
It must have been pretty tense the last few picks prior to ours. I'm not sure I would have been able to stay in the room to watch it unfold.

I saw this piece on Sunday morning on Countdown.

I welled up near the end of it, when they showed RW3 hoisting the Lombardi. Just a special feeling that the team I put alot of emotion into has this QB on their team. Can't really explain it, but I am sure most of you understand.

And yeah, the way they portrayed it, I got nervous that RW3 was gonna get picked before us....lol.....Schneider and Co must have been crapping their pants once it got down to the final 5 picks before them.

It's a nice story... but, and here's that negative in me again... if the JS and the rest of the management really felt that way about RW, they could of/would of traded up to get him. In the 3rd round, it would of taken a 5th or 6th pick to move up. The bottom line is, in hindsight, he was a steal as a 3rd round pick, and that will always be the story, but we didn't know that for at least another few months.

The draft is a crapshoot and the Seahawks, especially in the PC/JS era, seem to be doing better then other teams and we all hope it continues into the future.

If I recall, even Pete said that he didn't really know what he had until he got Russell into mini camp.

Always a huge assumption that teams can trade up or down whenever and however they so choose. Besides, the whole POINT according to most on this board is "maximizing" the "value" of the picks, so why in the world would they draft him higher then they did? The got him where they got him, and to the best of my knowledge did so without sacrificing additional picks, taking him to early ( imagine how some who love him now would be having an anurism every time he had a bad game or two if they had taken him where he SHOULD have taken him in the first round. People don't typically accept stellar or really good play if they have a 1 next to their name for some reason).

The FO deserves all the credit in the world waiting, and selecting Wilson where he was selected. Just like people have done for the Tatupu pick. Seattle held fast, didn't jump the gun, and got the playedr they wanted. Kudo's to them.

I wonder how many other of our super recent 'picks' have had this same FO reaction? Wagner, Sherman, Kam? The draft is a definite gamble. I can't think of any time in business that so much rides on what your 'competition' does at the same time you do it. It's a fascinating and highly underrated part of the game.
If I had to do a Master's again, I think this would be a great subject.

As for trading up and down, we do it all the time. So do most of the teams (except GB) And the later the rounds, more picks are traded, sometimes the same pick three, four times in a draft. So I would think that by the 3rd round, trading up for RW, if we really had though he was who he turned out to be.. they would of tried to get him sooner and the article doesn't state that happened at all. I really think that they get hyped up over every pick they really want, waiting for their turn and this one turned into a goldmine strike. js

Better be careful if you ever get over two drinks, man will probably take his shirt off.... ;) LOL. Dude just really doesn't care what others do or others think, which in my humble opinion makes him the GM he is.

Old but Slow wrote:For me, the interesting part of the video, and of the decision making process, is the pull between the physical characteristics of the player and the mental characteristics.

I am wondering if what makes the approach of John Schneider special, is his appreciation of the mental side of the game. As a look from a current perspective, look at the discussion of Johnny Manziel as opposed to Russell Wilson. Not really an applicable comparison, except that physically they are similar. In terms of Schneider's view, there would be no comparison (as if I know how JS thinks). Manziel is not willing to work hard, and Wilson is not able to not work hard.

I have to view the video, as a perspective on JS, more than it is on RW. Passionate, focussed, realistic, and seemingly more intent on what the team needs than on what his legacy will be. The ideal GM. And I would love to spend a day or two sharing a drink and conversation with the man. Maybe two drinks.

That is interesting. It's also a bit of an insight that I would think all GMs/Coaches go through with each player, but with this player being a possible steal and maybe even (at that time) a future starting or franchise QB, the stakes were a little higher. I think JS might be a good gambler, too as he doesn't let much out about which way he's looking.

With our picks and how the media looks at them, we have become the successful version of Al Davis with some of the surprise selections in the draft.

Two things: I love the moment when they flashed RW on the phone just prior to Seattle's pick, nearly sinking JS's heart, and then when RW takes the call and say, "That's what I'm talkin' about!"

The kid was just so fired up to be here from the get go, and it appears that he's not looking to leave, thank God.

I hope this current FO/Pete stay intact for years to come, but you never know. Been a great ride already, and we're not done yet.
