Black Monday is rapidly approaching. I think the average turnover over the past several years is between 6 and 7 head coaches. Here's my list:

As good as gone: Jim Harbaugh (Niners), Rex Ryan(Jets), Oakland's interim coach.

Possible: Gus Bradley (Jags), Marc Trestman (Bears), Mike Smith (Falcons), Joe Philbin (Dolphins), Tom Coughlin (Giants), Ron Rivera (Panthers).

Safe for now, but better win next year: Jay Gruden (Skins), Jeff Fisher (Rams).

They're not stupid enough to fire him...or are they?: Sean Payton (Saints), John Fox (Broncos), Jason Garrett (Cowboys).

Three more names might be Coughlin of the Giants, Marrone in Buffalo, and Pettine from Cleveland.
In the cases of Marrone and Pettine, their Front Offices don't seem to have given them enough horsepower to compete all year even if they have been competitive in many games.

I can't see Payton or Fox getting the can, but every coach not making the playoffs is subject to reviews and conjecture at the end of the year and Fox might go to the SB again with the improved Defense.

Of the list, I think sure bets are Ryan, Harbaugh (SF), and Rivera.
High probability are Trestman and maybe Gruden considering Snyder seems to want RGIII to be the QB and the turmoil around the team.

The fewer teams changing coaches the better for us keeping our staff intact.

Here is what I think:
CANNED
1. Trestman
2. Rex - canned
3. Jay Gruden - canned because he cannot please the princes (RG3 and Schneider)
4. Mike Smith
5. Whisenhunt (just a gut)

LEAVING by other means
1. I think Mr. Coughlin will hang it up (fired but the organization makes it look like he made the decision).
2. Harbaugh is traded or bought
3. I'm on the fence about Sparano for the Raiders (wherever they hang their cleats in 2015). He has had some nice upsets in the last few weeks and since I am not in the locker room to see why that is, I'd have to think he has a little bit of a chance given the mediocrity of the roster (besides their uber talented QB and Mr. Mack, of course).

ONE MORE YEAR - on the HOT SEAT
I think Gus gets one more year as will Pettine (in spite of his CRAPPY handling of the Johnny clipboard situation), Philbin, Lovie, Marrone and Fisher. If the Jags, Browns, Fins, Bux, Bills and/or Rams don't get decidedly better next year, they might each look for a new coach.

REPLACEMENTS

Smith may go somewhere else
Trestman out of the league
Rex will be a DC somewhere
Quinn and Bevel have strong chances to coach elsewhere
Gruden will be an Assistant somewhere
McDaniels will get a HC Gig

I'm surprised that no one raised an eyebrow to my suggestion that that Payton might be out in the Big Easy. There's been rumors that he could leave for the University of Michigan if the Wolverines lose out on the Harbaugh sweepstakes. They've had an awful rough year, especially at home.

Payton is under contract until the end of 2017 so he has a lot of time left AND he's a Super Bowl winning HC.
I think the latter gives him more latitude than if he had never won a championship.

IMO....

Gone: Harbaugh, Ryan, Sparano (Raiders-though he was never going to be retained, anyway), Trestman (not a Chicago type HC to begin with), Gruden, (he's practically begging for it with his RGIII remarks).

Safe for now: Smith (as long as he wins Sunday), Coughlin (NYG I believe said he's welcomed back for 2015).

Retained: Payton (season was an anomaly), Fox, Garrett (for sure now). Rivera (Panthers have to know they hamstrung team before season even began), Philbin (Dolphins owner said he would be back for 2015), Fisher (has done an amazing job of coaching this year, IMO).

The link does mention, however, that his heart is still with the NFL, with the Raiders being the strongest contender.

I've read a couple of reports that his wife wants to stay in the Bay Area, for what it's worth.
Even if less money, that could tip the scales for a move to Oakland should they make a serious offer.

Trestman surprised me, simply because he'd only been there two years.

I agree with ObS. I was one of the last to advocate getting rid of Mora mainly because I didn't feel anyone should be fired after just one season, but it was apparent that he'd lost the locker room and that it wasn't going to get better.

Trestman, essentially, belongs in the NFL as a coordinator. Good football guy in terms of schemes / x's & o's, but not a leader in the true sense of the word.

Mora Jr. should never have been brought aboard in Seattle in the first place. That had disaster written all over it, and it proved to be true. Between his brief and backwards azz tenure in Atlanta, and the comment he made about his desire for the UW job (which he claimed were taken out of context, but seeing/listening to the clip you could tell he was serious), he was destined to be a terrible fit not just here, but in the NFL moving forward. A franchise would be foolish to bring him back as a HC, IMO.

He's much better suited for NCAA. He's a kid at heart, it seems, and his kind of emotion lends itself better to that level of ball.

When we hired Carroll I thought we traded a young exuberant rah rah guy for an older carbon copy personality wise. Both ran their mouths in the media a little too much for my taste. Clearly there is more to it than that but I see Mora on a somewhat similar career path to Carroll. So so record as an NFL HC, goes to college and has some success and now is starting to gain some NFL cachet again.

We will see how it ends up for Jim, its been a fairy tale for Pete and Hawks fans.
