Help in the pass game

Postby Anthony » Sun Jan 04, 2015 3:20 pm

So a few people here have said that we will never get a true #1 wr or improve the oline pass blocking. Reasons for this is we are a running team, and money.

Meanwhile Detroit is sitting there with a great defense, great pass blocking oline, good rbs, and great WRs. So from a money perspective it can be done, and given Lynch while he still has plenty in the tank, we do no need to start building a better passing game. We have the QB we have the #2-#4 WRs, we need a #1, #1 TE(maybe depends if Willson can get it toghether), and better pass protection.

Well, some have said that perhaps, but I think that Pete would disagree. Clearly he wants a big body receiver, he's made offers to other teams SEVERAL times, including offering Percy around for a pass catching tight end.

I wouldn't get too worried about it, Pete WILL get a big body receiver one way or another.

I'm not entirely sure they are the same thing, seems to me, Detroit built that team with a whole lot of high first round picks, something Seattle hasn't had the benefit of since Carroll arrived. Hard to draft Suh, Ansaw or Mega Tron etc at the end of the first round, and paying FA prices for those guys does indeed factor into the ability to do so.

They will continue to attempt to do it, but assuming it can be done whenever and wherever is unrealistic.

Detroit is "sitting there" out of the playoffs, too. They haven't won a playoff game since 1992.

We may never get that true #1 receiver, at least so long as Pete is our HC. True #1 receivers are pretty hard to come by as you have to either have to tank a season bad enough to have a top 10 pick or dedicate enough cap space to obtain one through FA. Pete's philosophy doesn't allow for that. He'd rather build a strong defense and a solid running attack and try to skimp by on receivers and offensive linemen.

I used to think that this philosophy was ill advised, that the game had changed to the point where defense was not nearly as critical as having a great offensive attack with a franchise quarterback that could sling the football around the field 50 times a game. But I've changed my mind. Our current approach wins games, and even in those games we do lose, we're in it right up until the end.

Can't argue with success.

Yeah lets not argue but keep in mind we are on bad hit on Wilson from not being successful at all. FYI we have a franchise QB time to protect him and give him weapons.

I think we need more balance on Offense, and a big WR who isn't necessarily a #1 could help in the Red Zone.
It would give the Offense another dimension.

Agree I think that and a slight improvement on pass blocking not saying we need to be #1 but some were around 15th would do

We have all the guys we need to catch the ball. We could use line help but Wilson is going to spread it around to a bunch of targets no matter who suits up. Worked last year and working so far this year

As a team, you always have to upgrade or change.
Eventually you get figured out if you don't.
We did on Defense as we don't play the same as we did when Red was playing a lot at DE.

Adding a big WR can only help give our Offense a different look and ability.
There are a number in the draft that might be options and as was said earlier, Pete has been trying to find one the last few years.

I'd like a Dez Bryant, Megatron, Julio Jones type of receiver, too, and I'd like a couple of linemen athletic enough to stay between their man and the qb for more than a couple of counts. People in hell would like ice water.

Of course, we should always be looking for opportunities to improve our team, and adding a big, strong, red zone threat wide receiver has to be one of our top priorities. But I am not going to advocate that we go out and break the bank or change our overall philosophy for the sake of a #1 receiver. We tried that approach by trading for Percy Harvin and it didn't do squat for us.

There looks to be more than a couple that should be available late round 1 or later in the draft.
Consider Darren Waller from Georgia Tech 6-5 230 4.4 - 4.6

From NFL DraftScout:

07/24/14 - Other Georgia Tech prospects to watch in 2014: WR Darren Waller...Huge, athletic receiver who led all Georgia Tech wide receivers with 17 receptions for 367 yards and 3 TDs in 2013. Demonstrates soft hands, tracks the ball well vertically and is naturally a contender for any jump ball. Faces a two game suspension to start 2014 after violating team rules, so he'll need to maximize every opportunity in 2014 to showcase his ability to NFL scouts considering the Yellow Jackets' limited pass, run-heavy Flexbone offense. - Derek Stephens, NFLDraftScout.com

03/17/14 - Georgia Tech senior wide receiver Darren Waller has been suspended for the first two games of the 2014 season for a violation of team rules. Coach Paul Johnson announced the suspension on Friday. The team did not disclose the rules violations. Waller was second on the team, and first among wide receivers, with 17 catches for 367 yards and three touchdowns in 2013. He had a 72-yard touchdown catch against Mississippi in the Music City Bowl. Waller will not play against Wofford and Tulane. - AP Sports

They think he will be a UFA, but might be worth a 7th if he's still there.

Another that they rate as a 1-2 round pick is Devon Funchess from Michigan at 6-5 230 4.5-4.8. He's a former TE who
moved to WR. He's said to be physically like Kelvin Benjamin of the Panthers.
