OT: What's in your handle?

Postby RiverDog » Sun Mar 15, 2015 3:57 pm

There was a short discussion about monikers in another thread and it reminded me of a few occasions at the old PI forum where we used to run a thread about the meaning of our monikers and how we came to adapt them, and since it's the offseason, I thought it might create some interesting discussions, so I'll start:

I like dogs, and with the exception of my college days where having one was a bit impractical, I have never gone more than a month without a dog as a companion. I live near a big river, the Columbia. We have a local American Legion team named the River Dogs that resonated with me, so when I started blogging on the internet and needed a nickname, this one seemed very appropriate for a guy that has lived in Eastern Washington for his entire life. After all, if you tell someone that you're "going to the river", they're not going to think that you're talking about downtown Seattle.

I'm glad to see this thread return. I always enjoyed it at the PI.

Oly is a nickname based on my last name. Even though I was raised in Renton until I was 14, it wasn't until I lived in North Dakota from 14-18 that a few people started to call me Oly. It was mostly the jocks I was acquaintences with (I was a skater punk and none of my punk friends used the name), but because I loved football and wasn't so punk that I hated all jocks reflexively, I embraced the nickname. I joined the PI forum in 1999, my first year of college, and used Oly on that site. Coincidentally, a few months after I joined the PI with that name my family decided to get the hell out of NoDak and move back to the Olympia area. My parents are still in the area.

I've checked the forums just about every day in the past 15 years or so, even though I rarely post, and often think about the regulars through the years. Of all the old posters, the ones I never see that I'd most like to see on this site are Irish Greg, nlbm, Cowboy, and MCH. I even think about Dumb Azz Kracker (or something like that) from time to time. Those guys were hilarious.

I'm rambling now. I'm going to blame the beer.

My real first name is Ken and I am a Star Wars fan, NOT a Trekkie or a Worsy, I don't go to ANY conventions. Anyway hence the name obiken.

I decided to use my handle from ESPN when I joined here; BulldogHokieFan wasn't very Seahawks.

I have always loved tight ends and fullbacks. Something about being head down, ass up, bring your lunch pail to work and get the nitty gritty done has always resonated with me. I think Mack Stong epitomized that during his career. Plus, how great a football name is Mack Strong? Just awesome.

I, however, am a Star Wars fan, a Star Trek fan, a giant monsters fan; heck, I'm a genre fan. Sci-fi, fantasy, speculative fiction, books, movies, and games. About 15 years ago I joined my first online group, Star Wars based, and this just seemed like the perfect handle what with the Lucas ties. Shortly thereafter I joined a really great sports site that used to be linked with Metafilter called Sportsfilter. THX followed me over there and has been my handle for years on a variety of talkbacks and comment forums. If you happen to find yourself reading an article about something and check the comments and see my handle it's more than likely me. There are a couple of copycats because it's a known name and title of a movie, but they don't last too long.

Nothing interesting about mine- just carried over from PI, and chosen there when I switched from my original after some threatening behavior (didn't want it common knowledge where I lived and such, although I don't really hide that around here anymore).

“What’s in my handle?”…..a bad-tempered, surly cuss driven by skepticism, cynicism, pessimism with a side of Taoism……. ;)

It's interesting to see several posters reference Star Trek and/or Star Wars in their comments and descriptions. Someone started an obit thread when Leonard Nimoy passed away and it didn't attract hardly any comments. That's the reason why I don't mind OT threads in this forum as the other gets such little traffic that it doesn't justify a forum of its own.

As far as the MIA posters, yes, Irish Greg is a great guy and exquisite football mind. He used to post quite a bit over at seahawks.net but doesn't post much there anymore, either. However, I am in frequent contact with him and I can assure you that he has not lost his passion for the game, he just doesn't spend a lot of time online talking about it like he used to. I wish he would as his activity would definitely enhance the quality of the postings and encourage more participation from others.

Another favorite of mine is Bird Droppings. He, too, is a personal friend. He got tired of the trash talking in the old PI forum and dropped out there, posts here occasionally. He's one of the more creative writers I've come across, always good for a laugh along with his pearls of wisdom. He's called several shots well in advance of others, including being a month or more ahead of the eventual trade for Marshawn Lynch. Most recently, he predicted that we'd release Zach Miller, which surprised me as I thought he was safe as he had reworked his contract last year and that we were pretty thin at TE. Little did I know!

Here let me help with that - Maybe my latest topic might generate a little more activity over there?
