Wilson deal close?

Postby NorthHawk » Sat Mar 21, 2015 7:54 am

Comment from PFT

"Terry Blount of ESPN.com, while appearing on 710 ESPN in Seattle, said that a deal between the Seahawks and Wilson could be coming."

“From what I’ve been told they’re very close, they’re just trying to make sure every single thing is in place before they go forward with this,” Blount said. “I think it’s going to be bigger and crazier and different from what any contract has ever been.”

There are probably some out there that would argue that Mariota is the better QB already just because of the "measureables".

More than likely it won't get done for another month, like they did with Sherman and ET's extensions, which came just before the draft. It's a prudent decision to wait and see exactly what they are looking at before they take the plunge.

Now the word is that J.S. and Wilson's agent have not even started talks. The rumor mill is going crazy. Just know that Wilson in all probability will sign a new contract before the start of the regular season or John and Pete are imbeciles and we know they are not.

I told you all it won't happen until all the pieces are in place for the upcoming year and I hope that includes extending Bobby W first. May not happen this year at all to protect the cap.

The person that 'broke' that news is not one of the top football reporters. I see him reporting NASCAR more often.

The deal will get done, and it will get done before the season opener. I'll bet the house on it.

I won't be that specific. All I'll say is that it absolutely won't be before the time of year we extended ET & RS contracts last season (May 1st?), more than likely after the draft, and won't go beyond the regular season opener.

From one of our horses in this race...

PHOENIX – Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was asked Wednesday if he knows where things stand with the contract negotiations for quarterback Russell Wilson.

“There’s a good chance that I know that, yes,” Carroll said with a smile. “It’s a long process with extraordinary ramifications. It’s ongoing and we’ve had great talks. It’s tracking very well. We’re very well prepared and it’s almost that time.

“The timing of it has been handled beautifully. It’s been a big focus for us. We are stepping along this process in very good fashion. We’ll see what happens.”

Wilson is beginning the final year of his rookie contract, which will pay him $1.5 million in 2015. But he is in the process of an extension that likely will be worth well over $100 million.

A good portion of the new deal could be guaranteed, possibly more than $60 million. But contrary to the previous reports, it isn’t likely to be an all-guaranteed contract, which would be unprecedented in the NFL.

Anybody else hear on 710 that Russ' contract extension is being held up till his divorce is final?

I'm getting from a conversation on another site that they heard this. (I don't get it down here ...)

Financially, for Russell to wait, you would think that would make a lot of sense, unless Washington divorce laws allow for future earnings, derived from expertise obtained during the marriage to come into play,

My brother-in-law got whacked for that out here in Hawaii, as his military training, while he was married, turned into a 150k programming job after his divorce and the wife went to court and got them to give her an extra $300/mo, essentially for their kid, based on moving up from 36k up to the new pay even though the new job started 1 year after the divorce. It was written into the divorce and signed off. She also gets a percentage of his retirement from the military, no matter when he starts to collect it.

RW does not have children that he is responsible for raising, so that won't be an issue for him.

Bob, I had not heard anything but speculation on the divorce and the timing of RWs payday and I only heard that way back when he announced the divorce. Some speculated that it was because after becoming a super bowl winning QB, he was gonna get paid. I never read or listened to anything substantial on the subject, particularly not this year.

Yeah, I don't think I buy that as having any bearing on anything but I read someone say they heard it on 710 and I was hoping we had a regular listener hereabouts that could verify or call BS on it.

I have a hard time believing that divorce proceedings are in any way hindering contract negotiations. Even if the divorce wasn't final, I am quite certain that so long as there is a legal separation, which is a lot easier to obtain, they can go back to the point in time at which they separated and divide community property. It would make sense that anything accumulated after that point would be individual property.

9-7 ain't so very far from 12-4, losing Wilson could do that much damage.

I'm worried. I always worry. Wilson has always been way too good to be true. Hes bailed out Carroll who was a 7-9 7-9 guy and now has averaged 12 wins 3 years in a row. Pay the guy even if it costs us Wags, get it done right...

Absolutely. We did not have that radical of a change in our team between 2011 and 2012 to account for such a turnaround except for the quarterback position. We had a very good defense and had a very good running back. We went from a 7-9 and a non playoff participant in 2011 with TJack as our QB to 11-5 and what was IMO the best team in the league with Russell at the controls. If we lose Russell, we're screwed.

Actually the change in the team was on the Defensive side when Wagner was added.
Our Offense just didn't make the big mistakes.
The young Turks on Defense had just figured out their identity and developed the swagger we see beginning in late 2011/2012.
I will suggest the Defense won us more games than the Offense in those 2 years and maybe in 2013 as well.

It isn't coincidence that the playmaking ability of BOTH of those players raised Seattles success ( as well as the signing of some key free agents like Bennett and Avril) and the drafting of other players that contributed, the maturing of others like ( ET, Sherm, Chancellor, Maxwell etc), but IMHO placing ALL of the success on ANY one player is simply short sighted, and a bit foolish. You do NOT win SB's with a QB, period, TEAMS win SB's and without those players ( all of them, every last damn one of them) Wilson isn't succeeding on the level he is, NOR is Wagner, or Sherman, Thomas, Beast etc, etc.

Truth is Wilson is indeed very important, as is Wagner, why people feel it necessary to simply place all emphasis on one position is beyond me. QB's don't and never have, or will, win SB's all by their onesomes.

Nope.
I was suggesting the Defense was a major reason for the improvement and that it can't be attributed solely to the addition of Wilson as was suggested.

To use an argument that our friend Anthony would be proud of, we went from 28th in the league in total offense in 2011 to 17th in 2012. That's a huge improvement, and we did it with basically the same players on offense...except for Russell...that we had the previous year. And that's without taking into consideration Russell's learning curve in his rookie year. It was mid season before we took off the training wheels and started taking advantage of his unique skill set. It's clear that Russell was by far the biggest change to our offense, and by extension the entire team.

To be fair, our defense improved, too, moving from top 10 to top 5, and Wagner can take credit for some of that. But I don't think it rises to the same level that Russell's contributions made. After all, the QB is the most important position on the field, is it not?

The Seahawks didn't have Bennett or Avril in 2012 and they were still the hottest team in the league by seasons end. They were 25 seconds away from an NFC title game until the awesome defense choked it away.Wilson had broken the rookie playoff passing record by 50 yards and brought the Hawks roaring back from a 23 point deficit. This is a great team in most every phase but Wilson is the straw that stirs the drink. I still say he was SB 48 MVP in my book.

Wilson is, as Colin Cowherd said so correctly after this last Super Bowl"the most underrated athlete on the planet'. Hes the greatest dual threat QB in many years. Pay the man.

In 2011 our time of possession was 28 minutes. In 2012 it was 31 minutes. The defense went from 9th to 4th. I am sure that extra 3 minutes not being on the field also helped the defense. I am also sure not being put into a lot of jams with turnovers also helped the defense as in 2011 we had 14 ints, and Wilson we have never had 14 ints. Also in 2011 we had 18 total TOs, while in 2012 we have 13, 2013 11 and 2014 9. The only difference on offense was Wilson. Wilson now leads the league in 4th qtr/OT comeback winning drives over the last 3 seasons. Like it or not while everyone on the team is important some are more important than others and Wilson is far and away the most important.

I knew if I needed some stats to support an argument that Anthony would come to my rescue.

I had forgotten about the 4th quarter/OT scoring drives. TJack just couldn't get it done. We had a lot of close games in 2011 as we never lost a game by more than one score, but TJack just couldn't get us over the hump. It was to the point that Pete had such little confidence in him that he'd go for a near record FG on a cool, damp day at sea level rather than try to get a first down on 4th and 8. Fast forward a couple of years when Pete, with a proven FG kicker, kept the offense on the field against the Niners in the NFCCG, passing up a much shorter FG attempt.

If we ever lose Russell, either via injury or free agency, we'll slide back into mediocrity. Perhaps not all the way back to 7-9, but we'll place ourselves in the middle of the pack with other teams that play on the playoff bubble, like Cincy and the Panthers, rather than be a perennial SB threat that we are now. He's the one player on our team that we absolutely cannot afford to lose.
