Isn't he still technically under contract with the Hawks?

Be cool to see Pete back on the sidelines. Chicago is a cold place. If Pete could bring back a Bears style defense and winning, Chicago would love him.

They need an Offense HC to properly develop Caleb Williams.

That's one of several reasons why I don't think that the Bears will be interested in Pete.

The Bears are arguably one of the most desirable of the projected HC openings. They have a promising young quarterback, a top 10 draft pick along with two high 2nd round picks, and a lot of cap space, so they have a chance to improve immediately. The expectation is that they'll go after Ben Johnson, the OC of the Lions, whose stock has only gone up after taking himself out of the running last season and staying in Detroit. The one downside to the Bears job is that they play in what is currently the most competitive division in the league

Most coaches believe in themselves pretty well and would welcome the challenge of running their own team within one of the toughest divisions.
The payoff for taking a big name franchise like the Bears from futility to challenging for or even winning a championship is huge and that's also an attractive situation for competitive people.
