DK requests trade

I didn't see it coming, but I'm also not surprised. It's seemed like he's been a poor fit for the offenses we've been running...or at least there are better fits for his skillset. I was hoping that he'd want to stick around to see if the play-action game that Kubiak runs could have been a better fit—just imagine him setting up to run block on an intimidated CB only to have him turn on the jets on a deep route—but I guess the relationship was just too broken.

On the bright side, as RD has been preaching for years, getting out from a big WR contract will help the Hawks have the money to invest in the trenches. And hopefully with some nice picks in addition. I just hope that JS doesn't accept a lowball offer because of the request.

Who or what would you expect from Cleveland? I doubt they would give up a 1st round pick but they have an early round 2.
It’s a bad year for WRs this draft and now we need 2 with Lockett being released today.

Miles Garrett wants a trade too. They could make them both happy with a player for player trade!

If I am to understand this correctly, the Seahawks would incur a dead cap hit if they trade DK. Here is what I found on Over The Cap:

Trade pre June 1st designation- Dead Money Cap Hit of $21,000,000.......cap savings of $10,875,471

Trade post June 1st designation - Dead Money Cap Hit of $13,875.000.....cap savings of $18,471,000

Can someone verify this as I am a bit lost when it comes to this kind of stuff when trades happen.

That would be nice but doesn’t Garrett want to go to a contender and we are in the middle of a rebuild.

I was thinking more of getting a 1st from a team like Buffalo or KC or maybe even Houston.

That’s what it looks like to me so clearly a post June 1st designation would be the best option.

edit: post June 1st Cap savings according to Overthecap.com is $18,000,471

Yeah DK wants to go to a contender too, they all do, all the time, but being under contract they don't get to choose who they get traded too.

So trading for a player like Garrett would end up with us trading him later as he would be unhappy here, too.
For me, trading for a draft choice or two would be the better option and I think contending teams like Buffalo or KC might be willing to give up a 1st to improve their WR corps as both have a weakness there.

I tend to be pessimistic, so I'd agree about us being in a rebuild...

...but for the sake of conversation, I think we can make a case that the Hawks could make a case to Garrett that we're not. Garrett will know Macdonald's defenses well, and you have to think he'd be excited about that regardless. Now Macdonald can point to the improvements in our D, especially being the star rusher on a line with Big Cat and Murphy, and make the case that Garrett makes the Hawks a top-5 D instantly. With that D, the offense only needs to be above average to make us a contender, Macdonald says, and a new run-first offense with Geno and JSN will both keep the defense fresh and be enough to put some points on the board. I think Macdonald can paint a picture that with the DK compensation to improve the line that the Hawks can expect playoff football next season and a playoff run in just one more.

Do I believe that? I'm not sure. But getting back to the subject of the thread, I can see the Hawks making lemonade out of this situation and making a strong pitch to Garrett.

We should only make that deal if he agreed to a new contract before the trade is completed.

You can't designate a trade post June 1st, though. You would actually have to move him after that date.

At this point, if you move DK - I am not sure it makes sense to keep Geno for what you have to pay him.

Rip the damn band aid off.

Not at all surprising. Metcalf's body language indicated that he wasn't happy here. We should have traded him last season when his trade value was a lot higher. Last season, Metcalf ranked 39th in receptions, 24th in yds/game, and tied for 50th in TD catches. To be fair, some of those numbers are tilted some due to the fact that he missed two games due to injury, but he's clearly not a top 10 receiver worth the kind of money he's going to want.

I also agree with moving on from Geno, although the vibes coming out of JS/MM would seem to indicate that he's not going anywhere.

I think it’s a better market this year with a much lesser WR draft class. Lots of teams will want DK, but clearing the Cap space and readjusting their draft board because of his addition could take a while before an offer could be made.

I knew DK was tired of languishing on a team that can't use his talents well. He was drafted to take advantage of Russ's big arm. But Russ left and DK's production dropped without Russ throwing to him. Geno doesn't have Russ's arm. DK is not a tight route runner doing well in a WCO or dink and dunk ball. He's best with a QB who can use his speed going deep.

DK is apparently asking for a $30M AAV for his next contract. Is this just a power play from his agent or does he really want out?

It's negotiating. Holmgren said it mirrors the Joey Galloway situation when we wound up franchise tagging him the next year and trading him to Dallas for a pair of 1st round picks. He said he thinks DK will play in Seattle this year.

It’s been reported the Seahawks want a 1st and a 3rd for DK just like the compensation the Eagles gave up for AJ Brown.

If you have the right QB, DK can be an amazing pickup. Maybe the Jags can pick him up to help Trevor Lawrence. I'd take a 2nd from the Jags for DK.

Doesn't Baltimore hate paying people? As much as I'd like to believe players really do care about going to contending teams, the majority seem to like to get paid over contending. If Baltimore won't pay him, they won't be able to keep him.

I'd like a higher draft pick too. I'm hoping some team makes it seem like he's what they need to get over the top that sucks and has a high draft pick. That would be ideal.

Late 1st like KC at 31 and a 3rd? Both late picks equivalent to a 2nd and 4th in actuality. The Chiefs have multiple picks in the 3rd and they really need an upgrade at WR as they don't have a true #1.
A 1st and a 3rd would be pick #31 and either #66 (from Tenn) or #95.
I think that's quite doable from their perspective and they haven't been shy in adding talent.

Buffalo doesn't have a 3rd but they do have a high 4th from Chicago at #108. So that would be 30 and 108 or maybe next years 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Good riddance. Its all about greed, mo money mo money. Won't miss is dropping of the balls or his endless 15 yard penalties for losing his cool. Isn't even invested in living in Seattle. Bye bye DK.

There's lots of WR's on the free agent market/trading block. The Rams want to move Cooper Kupp. The Bengals aren't expected to bring Tee Higgins back. "Hollywood" Brown, Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs, DeAndre Hopkins, Devante Adams, and Chris Godwin are all expected to be on the market. That's a lot of options for teams that might be hesitant to trade anything of value for an inconsistent WR like Metcalf.

Depends on if the GM looks at DK with Prime Russell versus DK with Geno. If they have a QB more like Russ who can hit that deep route and DK can get back to 10 to 12 plus TDs a year, then maybe they value him higher. No one looking for a possession receiver is going to value DK highly as a possession receiver. If you have a QB with a accurate cannon and you are looking for a homerun receiver who can put up TDs, then you might value DK fairly high. If they have a Geno dink and dunk QB, then bringing in DK is a waste of money. He's not a possession receiver. He's a deep threat, blow the top off speed receiver who can rack up TDs with the right QB.

DK is only 27 unlike most others in FA and he has the ability to pressure defenses deep and hitting a home run. Some of the Free Agents are coming off injuries.
Outside of Higgins, DK has the best upside or probability of maintaining a high level of play of the WRs in Free Agency.

To Pittsburgh
For a 2nd round pick #52. We also swap late round picks.

We now have 5 picks in the top 100. But we have to rebuild both the IOL and WR.
Maybe we will be busy early in FA this year.

This is a touch off-season to swallow. But I love the rip band off approach. JS’s job is on the line and he needs to be aggressive; can’t get more aggressive than trading Geno and DK. How much cap space do we have now? Let’s go HUGE on the OL tomorrow. I don’t care who our qb is until the line is fixed.

We have a lot of Cap space now and a lot next year, too so we can spend big this year.
I just hope the prioritize the OL tomorrow.

The good thing with the draft picks is the meat of the draft is late 1st to end of 3rd or top of the 4th.

Wanted a 1st & comp wr from GB. But whatever. Sometimes you have to make unpleasant decisions. As many fans definitely have been clamoring for! So a $150m extension for DK was probably not gonna help us get back to the ship anytime soon.

The trade decisions so far have been smart money decisions. Two aging players with their best years behind them in Locket and Smith and one talented but underperforming malcontent in DK. Really, when you boil it all down, in the long run, success in the NFL boils down to making wise money decisions with regard to player personnel. In this case, it falls a little short maybe of being an outright tank fire sale but we have gotten rid of some of our better pieces in order to improve our chances of becoming more competitive down the road. But it will likely be tough sledding for a couple or three years.

I think DK was worth a 1st, so that's disappointing. That said, how many smart GMs would give up a 1st and sign him to that CRAZY contract? Not many. I wouldn't be surprised if, once DK's contract demands were out there, the Hawks were left with only one trade offer.

I preferred the Hawks keep DK and make better use of him, but not at that contract. Nope. No way. Not even a little interested. The Steelers are going to regret that one, especially in a couple of years when he hits 30 and is no longer able to succeed by being the best athlete on the field.

It's pick #52, so the 20th pick of Round 2.

We have #50 and #52 now, so a chance to grab two really good players two picks apart.

We were never getting a 1st for DK considering he needed a massive extension as well.

You were right we couldn't get a 1st for him but I read or heard he turned down the same offer from Seattle that he signed for in Pittsburgh. He just wanted out.
It was said he wanted to go to a warm weather team that is a contender with a good QB. But he signed with Pittsburgh who at this point doesn't have 2 of those qualities and may be doubtful about being a contender.

That's the thing - he didn't have a say where he went. They were going to get the best deal possible, and that was Pittsburgh.

If he would have had a no-trade clause, probably a different story.

DK's behavior has undermined his market value. There were warning signs of these tendencies coming out of college and they proved to be true.
