Not exactly a plot twist, this was totally expected from my point of view.

The Browns are going to start 0-4 or 0-6 anyhow so this way Manziel gets to come in for Hoyer and play the savior instead of the other way around.* They sure didn't base it on the 2nd. pre-season game because Manziel played marginally better than Hoyer in that one.

* I first heard this idea proposed by Michael Irvin and it made sense to me.

Hoyer better be the second coming of Johnny Unitas or hes a dead man walking. Honestly he has done nothing this preseason to earn the starting nod. Manziel has outplayed him marginally. But between the $20 and the Vegas trips and then the tweetybird my guess is they are trying to send him a message.

Manziel was terrible in the game against Washington. He looked completely lost out there and more than a couple times forced balls wildly off his backfoot without knowing where the defense was. Those balls were only incomplete by pure luck that there were no Washington defenders in range to intercept.

Hoyer might not have been much better but there is no way you can walk away from that game saying Manziel outplayed Hoyer by any margin. Hoyer is the incumbant and Manziel has not earned the right to start over him. Maybe in a couple weeks he passes Hoyer but after watching that Washington game there is no way I'd trust Manziel out there against teams that are actually gameplanning for him right now.

Totally, completely, and absolutely agree with this assessment. Manziel isn't an NFL QB at the present.

Add to that he let Washington players get to him and flipped them the bird.
Doesn't show the maturity or self discipline required to lead a team of men at the present.

Yep, nothing I have seen, read or heard makes me believe he was close to ready to be a starter week one this year he may indeed have more "potential" but IMHO potential and a dollar will still just get you a burger off the value menu.

Honestly Kal neither guy is worth a damn right now. Its a race to the bottom.

Manziel looked lost at times but also showed the mobility to escape and make plays which a defense cant game plan for very well. He had several catchable passes dropped, especially by Josh Gordon. Hoyer missed a wide open reciever by a mile in the end zone with excellent protection and no pressure. If they want to have a chance they would likely be better off starting Grossman. But I think Manziel HAS outplayed Hoyer this preseason. He has a QBR of 77 as opposed to 50 something for Hoyer. He has a TD pass. He has more yards and a higher completion percentage. Neither man has a turnover. Objectively hes outplayed Hoyer although it isnt saying much. I dont disagree with Pettines decision though. It probably makes the most sense.

The problem is what I said though. You can't trust Manziel. Some of those throws he uncorked when he felt pressure were just begging to be pick sixes. Hoyer didn't make plays true, but Manziel didn't make plays and was completely wreckless at the same time. Can't have that. He seriously just heaved the ball in the air without knowing where it was going two or three times. If those blind throws get intercepted (something that's as probable as an incompletion) Manziel's QBR plummets. This is one of those cases where the truth is on the film not in the numbers. If all I had to work with was what we've seen from Manziel on the field this preseason I wouldn't trade Pryor for him straight up. And I'm a guy who'd like to see him succeed. I think it'd be fun if he was good, but what I've seen from him on the field was absolutely Putrid.

That kind of goes back to what I said about him before the draft. He has a tendency to play with zero plan, and a LOT of his throws reinforce that there was no plan. He lofts passes down the middle which is fine if it is Mega Tryon and you are playing the Cowboys secondary, but against a decent defense every one of those throws are picked, he uncorks throws haven't got a chance in hell of being completed, and often times, to an "area" not a player, that isn't an area where anyone was even SUPPOSED to be to begin with. He lacks discipline, mechanics and an understanding of a rudimentary offense, much less a complex one like the WC offense. Add in his maturity issues, and there was simply NO way to start that kid game one, and even though I am sure they will start him earlier than they should, honestly I think he would be better served NOT starting this entire season, maybe running something like Kaepernik did his first season and a half, until he learns some of those necessary skills.

It's not something that I can honestly say that I expected, but it comes as no surprise. I've always felt he was over rated and that the Browns made a huge mistake in hitching their wagon to him.

It's probably the best thing that could happen to him. With all the distractions, both self initiated and those beyond his control, he's not ready to lead an NFL team.
