official nfcc bad calls thread

Postby rottweiler » Sun Jan 19, 2014 5:12 pm

The personal foul on Donte Witner was kinda bad.

I was afraid the zebs would do some "make-up calls" after they effed up on that one.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand sho 'nuff, two plays later: the holding call on Giacomini.

Hawks have got to take advantage of bad calls in this game.

The NFL hates us.

Bet Whiners fans disagree, though.

Even a Hawks fan has to admit that the no-fumble-at-the-goal-line call (of the non-reviewable variety) was kinda egregious.

Meh. Will take it, and just hope that the NFL isn't already making plans for "make-up calls" in the SB.

agreed - And on the next play god reached down and caused Marshawn to fumble. Don't think the lord wanted this epic game being decided by a blown referee call.

Truth. That was the only time I can remember being glad the Hawks fumbled points away. Mad respect to Bowman for maintaining possession with only one functional knee. It seemed wrong that the refs took that from him, so the football gods gave it back.

I'd sure like to see the same cre3w do the Superbowl! That was terrific officiating for the most part. If anything, the majority of questionable or bad calls went against the Niners.

Like I said, we like Geno! He had a lot of outside pressure from the media that all think we somehow 'cheat'... yet, he controlled the AllStar crew and we had only 2 DB penalties. I didn't see a lot of obvious missed calls and I didn't hear Collingsworthless moan about it.

OT: anyone interested, you can read about Geno the NFL Ref in Peter Kings multi-part article on 'life being an NFL Official' on the MMQB website.

Even if you disdain Peter, what the ref's do before and after each game, makes it good reading.

And Geno refereed 3 NCAA basketball games this past week. Crazy.

I liked reading this exchange, because it's pretty much the way I saw it as well.

Bowman, Wow.

God bless the guy, holding onto the ball while suffering what looked to be a Thiesman-esque leg injury. Hope he has a full recovery and return to football next season.

Meanwhile...

GO SEAHAWKS!!!

I thought there was at least one late hit on RW not called, Kaep kicked his fumble on purpose (no mention about it), the PI on Sherm was lame. I thought the call on whitner against Luke Was fair (close at best) and thought Troy needed to read the rule book & STFU. I also thought the roughing the punter call was correct. Mofo left his feet while the punter had the ball and he clearly tried to adjust to miss him.... Though admittedly I don't know the rule.

The Bowman fumble thing sucked. I was sad about it and actually relieved the exchange was fumbled on the next play. Though it was not a bad call - it was a bad rule. Like when we got the fumble last week and could not get it reviewed. The rule sux. If reports are correct that fans threw stuff at him on the way out.... That's embarrassing.

There was another penalty against the niners I thought was bad (can't remember), but think the officiating was ok over-all.

The whiners think it made the diff in the game. I think think it was 3 turnovers in the 4th quarter. But that is just me. As frustrating as RW was at times, he beat a red hot top 3 D w/ a 104 passer rating.

We benefited from the "running into the kicker" penalty that should have been roughing and an automatic first down. That one was huge, so I'm not subscribing to the hand wringing over the officiating. If anything, we got more breaks than the Niners did.

This crew will not be the one doing the SB.
The SB crew will be the ones that did the first AFC and NFC playoff games.

I don't like that.

My rule about the refs is simple. If I remember a call that changed the game and if that call was illegitimate then you are not a good ref. If I don't remember much about the refs or don't feel strongly about them, then they did a good job. I put the refs in the latter category in this game.

That being said, it seems as if Breno has some technique problem that coaches have not stopped. His penalties have been HUGE HUGE HUGE. I gave him a pass the last game against the Saints, and this last time I did not see it, but I wonder if there is something about his technique that is causing the problem.

That's a pretty good litmus test for refs. We got a break on the two worst calls, the fumble at the 1 and the roughing the punter that they only called running into. Outside of those two calls, I thought they did a decent job.

Breno has cleaned up his act on the personal fouls, but his holding is still a problem.

Breno's "hold" wasn't. They could have called a hold on Sweezy ( and maybe they just called the wrong #) end dove, Breno flopped down ( which is legal, as is laying on them on the ground) not a complaint about the refs, just pointing out that the hold didn't happen at least from him ( and honestly the hold last week against him on the Turbin run was questionable as well) have to say, in his case, I believe his reputation proceeds him into the game each and every week ( kind of like Jones never held, yeah right) just the way things go.

I don't know how *well* officiated it was, but I don't think it benefited either team more than the other. On one of Kaep's long runs, our DE got *bear hugged* and that's what broke Kaep open (at least arguably).

And yeah, like someone said, the fumble/takeaway on the goal line is just a bad rule, plus it ended up being a blessing in disguise- with the fumble a play later, they got the ball at around the 10 rather than the 1" line.

In retrospect, I'm glad we fumbled, as had we scored a TD on the ensuing play instead of fumbling, it would have given us a two score lead and with it, the ball game. The Niners would have certainly used that play to insist they would have won had it been called correctly and the league would have had another officiating crisis on their hands. The announcers did indicate that the league plans on revisiting that rule in the offseason.

BTW, that fumble wasn't on Beast, it was on Russell. He didn't put the ball in the bread basket and instead, put it up at his pad level.

Ya, I worry about that as well. If it is close you know they will call roughing on us.

Due to the XL travesty, there's going to be a huge focus on the officiating, especially as it relates to us getting bad breaks. My prediction is that the officiating will follow the pattern of what they've set during the previous playoff games this season, ie not calling it close and letting them play. BTW, Denver isn't exactly penalty free, either. They were the 5th most penalized team in the league.
