The Rookies and other Newbies

Postby RiverDog » Tue Aug 14, 2018 5:04 pm

The two that impressed me the most were Rasheem Green and Will Dissly.

It will be interesting to see how Green performs against starting quality OL vs. the backups and bubble players he was going up against last Thursday. Dissly looked solid. We already know that he's a good blocker. If he proves to be a reliable receiver like he did last week, he could be one of the steals of the draft. He's being compared to Zach Miller.

I didn't get much of a chance to see Penny.

Whatcha all think?

I'd like to see Penny behind the 1st OL and not the 3rd.

Agree on Dissley.

I know these two are not rookies but it is their first year here so I'm going to add them to this.

I am really intersted in seeing Marshall and what he can do and Fluker. As Cbob mentioned, Fluker looked good in run blocking and the pocket for RW was clean on the one drive he was in for. Supposedly, the Chargers have a top 10 defense this year so it will be interesting to see how the Offense holds up in the first qurater on Saturday night.

Oh Shaquim Griffin without a doubt belongs in this conversation! He didn't start but once he got on the field all he did was make 4 tackles in his fist 4 plays and lead the team with 9 tackles total, kid was everywhere!

Penny got a broken finger and will have surgery this morning.
He should be out 3-4 weeks.

It is just not fair that is going to be a setback for Rasheed hope he can catch up and produce later in the season. Glad it's only a finger and doesn't affect his run game.

Well they're not going to cut a 1st round pick for a broken finger. Still would have been better for him to stay with the team through camp.

I imagine he can still practice with the team. Wear a red jersey so he isn't hit, but still get some of the timing down and understand the plays so when he's ready to play, it won't be a huge step.
Like said above, it's not as bad as a knee or other leg injury where he can't run.

Another guy from college that was hailed as tough laid up by a broken finger. Sheesh.

This was more than likely a team decision to hold Penny out, so I'm not applying the wimp tag on him just yet.

I'm not thinking wimp. It just seems we have this bad luck with players that were fine in college suddenly getting strange little injuries. Okung was fine his entire college career. Carpenter fine. They get here and bang. I hope Penny survives the occasional Seahawk curse where some player not known to have injuries suddenly gets hit by a series of nagging injuries.

more than likely, Penny's injury was a compound fracture, which is why he had to go east to see a specialist to put it all back in the finger.
He came out of surgery not even in a cast, so that's good news.
This would mean he can do everything except take a left-handed handoff. He can run, he can lift some weights and he can watch film...
I'd be a lot more worried about Dion Jordan's injury right now.

Carpenter's injuries more than likely had to do with his being out of shape vs. just plain being snake bit. Okung had a much more serious problem with his ankles. It's a lot less likely to re-injure a finger than it is an ankle, so I wouldn't be too alarmed.

More than likely, Penny would be playing if this were Week 12 and not the preseason. If it were an injury dealing with his legs, knees, or feet, I'd be concerned. But not a finger. And as JS noted, they didn't even bother to immobilize it, so it can't be too serious. He'll still be able to participate in practices in everything except for full contact drills.

Not sure how injured Procise was in college but he is another example that could be used.

I think it is the weather in the NW. A lot of rainy days may impact the overall mood of the players. That's the best excuse I have which is flimsy as heck but this problem has been nagging this team for a lot longer than the last couple years.

A couple of the injuries to Okung was just bad luck. Our own players rolled up on his ankles more than once and (I think it was Dockett) hip tossed him to the ground which caused a different injury.
Things like that happen in the game all the time, but there are some players who go whole careers without being rolled up on or who just happened to be in the right position to not get a serious injury.
Okung just wasn't one of them when he was with us.

I wonder if there was ever a study done on the number of rollup injuries on a ZBS line versus a normal blocking scheme.

That's a good question, but for some reason, I get the feeling that most of the roll up injuries are when pass protecting.
Maybe I'm wrong on that.

It has me thinking a little, though.
Could the emphasis on side to side aspect of the ZBS mean linemen could be more susceptible to getting "caught in the wash" on a run play?
It may be a factor, but I don't know where to start to find answers.
