Chiefs v. Patriots: the Brady escape

Did you see that play where the Chief's rookie lineman obviously released his hold on T. Brady, allowing Brady to score near the goal line? Certainly, he should have paid more attention to whether Brady had actually gotten rid of the ball or not but it was also obvious he was paranoid about being called for a penalty. These new rules are killing the game. Way too much for the defenders to have to think about.

The new rule about tacklers not being able to land with full body weight on quarterbacks? I can't believe they instituted that one! I agree with the part of it that has to do with not picking the quarterback up off the ground, that's easy enough to stop doing. But having to shift your weight to the side to avoid landing on him with full tonnage is absurd. That's just too hard to do in the moment.

But I do agree with you in principle, that the NFL has gone overboard in their quest to make the game safer, and IMO there latest twist on the interpretation of roughing the passer in which the tackler cannot land with his full body weight on the QB is driven more by marketability than it is by overall safety. The quarterback is the star of the show, and they want them healthy not so much for humanistic reasons as they do financial considerations.

I had heard where the league was going to revisit that rule interpretation during this season. Has anyone heard if they told the refs to alter the way they've been calling roughing the passer?

I haven't heard anything about it Riv. According to my wife though, that's par for the course...

River, there was something about the NFL allowing "some body weight" going forward, if it was not considered 'violent' -- Now, all they have to do is to describe 'violent' to us. Personally, the 12k they might of taken from me would of been worth it to sack Brady. That Kid's really playing 'touch' football, He's got a big issue going forward. I'm sure he heard about it from the team.

I've come to the conclusion that Defensive players will have to wrap up the QB then fall onto their own back and drag the QB on top of them.
Unfortunately if they do that they may end up driving the QB's head into the turf so another rule would have to be added. It might also mean
more injuries for DL as QB's the size of Newton or Roethlisberger would take a lot of twisting to pull down.

Frank Clark showed last week how you should wrap up and bring down a QB in today's game.

I think there are going to be some severe injuries to QBs as they get whipped around and hit their head on other players pads. But we'll have to wait and see if that is true or not.

Thanks for the op ed on the roughing the passer rule.

I'm not a huge fish and chips fan as I don't like deep fried fish and I've worked in the potato business for 40 years, making the 'chips' part a little routine. I did have an order just to say I tried some.

The beer was pretty wimpy. I like a good, stiff IPA and my ABV sweet spot is between 6% and 7.2%. The strongest IPA I saw in both England and Ireland was 4.5% ABV. Plus they served it a little warmer than they do here in the states, especially the first one I had at Heathrow while waiting for IG's flight to arrive.

I'll give you guys a break down of the football/beer related portion of our trip a little later so as not to clutter up a bunch of threads with my musings.
