Duds and Studs week 9

Postby HumanCockroach » Tue Nov 13, 2018 3:42 pm

I've seen these articles for a couple years, and thought maybe it would be fun to nominate and vote on these discussions weekly. While the Hawks certainly aren't eliminated from post season play, many knew coming into the year it would be extremely difficult, and unlikely that they would pull it off.

I haven't given up, but I certainly haven't moved much ( if at all) from my prediction of 7-9 to 9-7 coming in to the season, and am all for distractions as I wait for something resembling a pass rush, and decent DB play to arrive.

https://emeraldcityswagger.com/2018/11/ ... eles-rams/

For dud I'm torn between whatever Schottenheimer continues to do in hurry up offensive situations ( that's 3 consecutive end of game/ half playcalling time management issues) and Bobby Wagner.... no offense to kj, the pass rush, Ken Norton or defensive backs....

I'm going with Bobby... during the week he was interviewed to discuss the defense and this matchup against the Rams. He discussed how much they've grown up, and that the D was taking that next step .... he then proceeded to struggle throughout the game. Missed tackles, poor angels, it even appeared he avoided trying to tackle Gurley on his last TD. The defense as a whole drastically regressed in this game from the first meeting ( at least they held 1 facet in check in Seattle).

For Stud I would go with Wilson. That's the closest he's looked to vintage SB Wilson in a long time imho. He moved around in the pocket, not just tried to spin out the back, ran efficiently and intelligently, and despite a couple pretty poor throws here and there ( relax, it happens) I thought he was pretty on point for the bulk of the game...

I was REALLY tempted to choose Simmons for my nomination. I had to Google the guy during the game, and his performance was on par or even slightly better than some of Flukers games, in his first NFL start, against guys named Suh and Donald. Pretty damn impressive.

One of the studs has to be Lockett. He's rapidly become Russell's go-to receiver, and he's looked good on the jet sweeps. I also trust him back on kickoffs as I can't ever remember him fumbling.

Although he was hurt Sunday, I was really liking McDougald's play.

I agree, Lockett has played extremely well this entire season. His route running has improved drastically even in the last 5 games. Coming out of breaks cleaner, and being used on more double moves, which he's selling really well.

For me it was Simmonds.
All year, when Fluker was out our Offense regressed, but this time against one of the better DL's (at least on paper) and for sure two of the better DT/NT's in the NFL, we didn't
even notice Fluker's absence. He's also a pretty big guy and worked well with Ifedi.
I think the right side of the OL has a future and maybe Simmonds might be able to fill in at LG as well.
The concern is Pocic. Is he not progressing in this new scheme by Solari or is he just being outplayed in practice?

Good point about Pocic. I haven't seen much of him this season.

IMO for a team that's in a rebuilding mode such as we are, I've felt that a BPA strategy is the best way for us to approach the draft, at least with the early picks.

BPA? Nah, we have needs on the DL and LB positions for sure and we don't need another RB or OT, and we've never selected a DB earlier than the 3rd round so that won't happen either.
It should be DL and be someone who can provide some QB pressure.
It would be best if it was an inside rusher, but a dominating Edge rusher in this deep DL draft would be welcome, too.

I think our LB situation gets much better once Kendricks gets off his suspension.

Pretty sure ET was in the first draft class... they'll do it, but only for somebody they feel has that kind of dominant upside.

Maybe. We'll have to wait and see what the jail reform bill holds for such crimes. I know this, he will most likely be thankful to a team that took him on when no one else would.

I read somewhere that he is expecting a 30 month sentence which might end his career.

That's the current minimum sentence under the current laws. The prison reform act may change that if enacted soon enough.

(THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT JUST WHAT IS BEING REPORTED)
Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell said even though they have the votes to pass the prison reform act they are most likely going to delay it for a year. (not sure what the "dumbfounded" emoji is but I would use it here if there was one.

Even so, if he gets the current minimum, which might be something a judge would want to do so as not to set an early precedent, he still gets 2 1/2 years. If he was 23 years old, it might work out, but not so much at his age.
I hope he gets off easy but I doubt it will happen.

I hate to agree with you (not because its you but because it is not good for Kendricks and thus, us) but you are most likely right especially if the reform act isn't in place when he's sentenced. I hope they relook at his sentence whenever the reform act is passed though.

Is that the minimum, or is it as been reported what is expected? I honestly don't know if jail time is required, or not in this type of circumstance.

Interesting article. I was under the impression from other reporting that it was the minimum.

Here's a link for penalties to securities fraud:
https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/crime-penalties/federal/Securities-Fraud.htm

Here's a link for the Aiding and abetting from a state of Ohio (I think that's where he was too) on a felony.
https://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/whats-the-maximum-and-minimum-sentence-for-aiding--139790.html

So none of those links show a mandatory minimum sentence but they all suggest one heavily for a federal crime. That said, what I'm not sure about from your original article linked is can he "plea deal"? I'm pretty sure the trial is over and it is down to just the sentencing now so I'm not sure if he can cut a plea. That doesn't mean he didn't cut a plea already or thta the judge may take his actions into account.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best for the guy. Reading his comments tell me that he has worked very hard to get things right and he made a bad move that he regrets and is trying to make right. Many of us have stumbled along the way but the big difference is many don't get caught.

It would be extremely tempting to trade having insider knowledge, but you have to be disciplined.
Fortunately for me, I've never been in that position to make that kind of decision.

The articles I've read suggest this sentence might mean the end of his career as he only has a few years left anyway.

Martha Stewart only got 5 months in prison and 5 months home confinement. Of course, that was over 15 years ago and the case against her may not be pertinent to Kendricks, but it did involve insider trading.

She crossed my mind when we first signed him.... but.... she's old white woman who became famous for making doilies and such, Kendrick's young black man who made himself famous hitting other men ... not saying it's forgone conclusion, but it wouldn't shock me even a little bit if 3 yrs was the punishment.
