Mike McCarthy might end up coaching with...

Postby RiverDog » Sat Jan 12, 2019 3:51 pm

...the Seahawks? WTF?

The one place he could end up eventually being in play is Seattle. McCarthy and G.M. John Schneider are believed to be close friends, and Pete Carroll is likely moving toward the end of his run with the Seahawks. If Schneider stays post-Pete, McCarthy could be the successor to Carroll.

I wonder if Florio is basing this theory simply on the fact that Schneider and McCarthy are friends or if he has some other reason to believe in what seems to be a pretty outside the box thought.

PC just signed a contract extension... There is no need at OC... some sort of passing game coordination or something?? Really seems like a reach.

It’s just the friends angle, but it’s dependent upon McCarthy not coaching for a couple of years.
I doubt it will happen.

Pete's extension doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to coach to the end of the term. IMO one of the reasons he signed the extension now was so as to help expedite the resigning of Russell Wilson. Otherwise, I don't know why he wouldn't wait until we know who our new owner is going to be.

But I agree about there being nothing to it other than Schneider's friendship with McCarthy, or at least nothing I can think of. Just curious if anyone else has a different angle. I don't want McCarthy here anyway, not even as an OC.

I think it's a smart financial move to sign before the new owner is in place.
He's now guaranteed money should the new owner want to go in a different direction.

Pete signed a multi year deal, but I got the impression that it's really year to year in his mind with health being the biggest concern.
At his age, things can go awry pretty quickly, so I think he sees the end, but is enjoying coaching right now.

Had Pete chosen to leave the Hawks because he didn't like the new owner, he could have gotten every penny of what he's earning from the Seahawks in the form of a new contract from someone like Dan Snyder, who would have jumped at the chance to hire a coach with the resume Pete possesses. He would have been the biggest name to hit the coaching market in at least the past 10 years. By signing the extension, Pete's closed out that option.

I agree with your impression that in reality, Pete is year-to-year, but I don't think it's health related, at least not his physical health. IMO if a new owner comes in and does something he doesn't like, he'll either retire or return to the colleges.
