Black Monday

Postby RiverDog » Mon Jan 04, 2021 5:57 am

The day after the completion of the regular season.

So who gets the axe? There's already been several that have been let go, including Matt Patricia of the Lions, Bill O'Brien of the Texans, and Dan Quinn of the Falcons. The Jets announced Sunday night that Adam Gase won't be back.

Anthony Lynn is rumored to be on the chopping block, but the Chargers looked pretty decent lately, winning their last 4 in a row, including in yesterday's big win over the Chiefs. I think he stays.

Doug Marrone of the Jags is almost certainly done, and rumors are already swirling as to who his replacement might be, the most notable of which is Urban Meyer.

Does Mike McCarthy survive in Jerry World? Are there any surprises out there, like Vic Fangio of the Broncos or Doug Pederson of the Eagles (did you get a load of some of those coaching decisions last night?)?

And who replaces those fired coaches?

I really thought that Lynn would stay, if nothing else to give Herbert some continuity. I'm also surprised to see Meyer throwing his hat into the ring.

It looks like the Jets and Texans are interested in Schotty:

Tom Pelissero has added that the Jets are likely to interview Brian Schottenheimer to be their next head coach. The team is expected to part ways with Adam Gase following the team's season finale against the Patriots.

Schottenheimer has now been linked to two head coaching vacancies with the Houston Texans being the other.

The Eagles fired Doug Pederson today.
They seem to be late to the party, but I guess his view didn't match Lurie's or their GM's.

I bet he's not unemployed long. Maybe he wanted out which is why he pulled Hurts last week. He was saddled with a china doll head case who had lost his courage and a GM that left the cupboard bare. Its a total N.F.L.(not for long )when he brought home a lombardi to a town that never had one with a backup qb who has never done anything anywhere else since his rookie year.

What was that? 3 years ago? Philly's a tough crowd   .

I think with 5 HC jobs open Pederson's gonna get some interviews to be the head guy and I dont even think he would want to be a coordinator. Who knows. The Allens can afford to pay him. Maybe he becomes the guy in waiting.

I'm with HT. Pederson has a Lombardi under his belt. Someone is going to offer him a head coaching job.

The Jags hired former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer as their head coach:

Urban Meyer, who won college national championships at Florida and Ohio State but also retired twice citing family and health reasons, is the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced Thursday.

I hope being a HC in the NFL doesn’t cause him further health problems.

Yeah, that one surprised me, but apparently Meyer had been putting out feelers for months, telling former assistant coaches that he might be calling on them. College HC's don't have a real good track record, Pete being one of the exceptions.

I think it was a good hire, but Eric Bieniemy, would have been better. Saben was 9-7 and then bolted, Chippy drafted most of the Eagles SB team, and then was fired with a winning record. Outside of Spurrier most have done ok.

Let's not forget about Bobby Petrino and Dennis Erickson. "Chippy" was a disaster in Philly and lasted just one year with the Niners.

How was Chippy a disaster with a winning record? He got Fletcher Cox, Zac Ertz, and started Foles. Philly has a habit of kicking winning coaches to the curb. No question he totally flopped on SF.

OK, I'll retract my disaster comment as it applies to the Eagles and make it more inclusive. "Chippy" was fired twice in 4 years, so I'll use that standard for my disaster remark. He made the playoffs once, his first season, and never won a playoff game. In his final season in the NFL, his Niners lost 13 games in a row. And speaking of Foles, he traded him to the Rams for Sam Bradford, a move that fell flat on it's face. He also traded Shady McCoy to the Bills for a linebacker that lasted one year.

Pete and Jim Hairball are the only two college coaches to have taken teams deep into the playoffs since the turn of the century, and you sort of have to put an asterisk by Pete as he had been a head coach of two NFL teams prior to his gig with us. There's a reason why not many teams turn to the colleges for their head coaches.
