Where do we go from here??

Postby TriCitySam » Mon Jan 11, 2021 7:50 pm

A day after getting our butts handed to us - a dismal performance by RW and the entire offense; a lackluster performance by the defense and the coaches - it's almost as tough to look forward:

UFA's: Carson, KJ, Mayowa, Dunbar, Hollister, Hyde, Iuapati, Ogbuehi, Pocic, David Moore, Shauquill. Plus a few others, and Poona is a RFA. THEN, we have Jamal, Lockett, Reed, Dunlap, Diggs, Shell, Brown, Penny, Dissly, DJ Reed, Flowers, Meyers and Dickson all entering their final year. Overthecap shows us with $17MM in cap space for '21.

WOW! 8 offensive starters and 9 defensive starters. We'll see how good Schneider is....

We haven't died yet.

I would focus on Dunlap and Adams, two key defensive pieces to build around. Everyone else is expendable.

I would fire Schotty. Fact is Pete has a Indy 500 racing team on offense. He needs a Indy 500 OC to take advantage of it. Fact is our run game is good, but our passing game has elite pieces that require an elite passing game.

At what point do we quit insisting that coordinators fall on their swords? Asking for a friend.

I don't have a link, but I just saw a quote from Pete regarding the resigning of Chris Carson. He was asked if, given that he want to run the ball more in 2021, that resigning Carson was the team's top offseason priority, his initial response was "No, not necessarily". Later, seemingly sensing that he had just committed a Freudian slip, Carroll amended his response to say, in typical Pete Speak, that resigning Carson was a "huge priority".

Just reading between the lines, it appears to me that we've seen the last of #32 in blue and green.

I think they will offer him a fair contract given his injury history and how he plays. I suspect other teams will as well but they can get
younger and healthier players with draft picks, so I suspect he has a fairly decent chance to re-sign here.

Nobody know exactly where the salary cap is going to be next year. I have read that we could have anywhere from 6 to 26 mil to work with, which is much better than some teams, like the Saints who project to be between 75-95 million OVER! In fact the only NFC playoff teams with more projected cap space than us are the WFT and Tampa Bay, but they only have 30 players signed for next year. The Rams are looking at being 21 - 41 million over while the Cards have 1 mil more than us and the niners have about 8 mil more. We aren't in a great position Cap wise, but we certainly aren't in trouble either. We need to be smart with the Cap, but the reality is the issues with this team have very little to do with the cap.

I agree Riv! When do you stop blaming subordinates and blame the head Cheese? No, we have not died yet, but what IF Adams does'n't sign? We just wasted 2 first rounders for one season?? I think you were right 3 years ago when Russ signed his max contract, this is the new reality. We got Bobby at 25 mil a year and Russ at 35 mil a year, that's 60 million for 2 players. Cap is what 198 mill? so you have 2 players hogging over 25% of the SC. So no, we are not dead yet Rivy, but where is the future in that?? I know Steeler fan pain is low on our priority list, but Benny makes 45 million a year, and he is done, and how do you move off him? So I guess my point is it could be worse. I think the American FB is becoming a QB factory and smart teams will find the next kid for 5 years and then move on, and have massive pieces around him. But thats just me, some would say I have always been Darthken, not obi!!

I typically give coordinators a lot of slack, but you simply can't have the offensive talent that the Hawks have and put together the type of offensive performance we had for multiple games this year. You don't pay a QB 18% of our salary cap and then not use him. A big part of that is on RW, but our offenses inablity to adjust to the 2-high safety teams were playing against us has to be on Schotty. Were we predictable? It sure looked like it on Saturday and that has to fall on Schotty as well. To me as an if you allow something as simple as teams playing more cover 2 against you slow you down that speaks volumes to me.

Didn't care for that type of ball when he was hired. Don't care for Pete's style of offense. I get it. Even if we get rid of Schotty, Pete will hire another Schotty. Schotty is just another Bevell. So there likely won't be any change on offense until Pete is gone. Pete's style of football doesn't work without a top 10 defense to win Super Bowls.

So I guess we're stuck until Pete moves on.

Do we look at a QB in a fairly early round or find a steal that can play in the league? I know the pack doing that last year after a mediocre year from Rodgers sure lit a fire under him. I think Russ having a non threatening back up like smith may give him a sense of security.

I remember everyone freaking out when the Hawks sent a scout to Josh Allens pro day. Hindsight is 2020. I bet had he fallen to them they would have taken him.....

I agree guy, but I wonder if we can even keep Adams, he wants a lot more than 3 mill a year. I was looking at the cap chart for us, We sure paid Olsen a boatload huh?

Adams deal isn't up until next season, unless he wants to renegotiate. Olsen signed a one year deal, and with Schotty gone, it's unlikely he'll be back next season.

Look, they are going to keep Adams. You don't pay 2 1st round picks for a player and then not keep him. That would be insane. They'll clear cap to keep him.

I'm sure that we have a rough idea and general agreement with Adams as to what kind of deal we're going to offer him and when. We wouldn't have traded that kind of capital without such an understanding.

First we have to hire a new OC. My guess is a Bevell return since he will probably be gone in Detroit if he isn't already.

I'd lay some pretty good money against that possibility.

Pederson's name has to be one of those under consideration, assuming that he doesn't get a head coaching gig.

Here's an article naming 9 possible candidates:

I hope your right, but We have no 1st or 3rd rounder River, and we could really use a good Blocking TE to seal the edge, and we must get some decent OLinemen now, but I don't see how. So going with what we've got is like doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result, its a definition of madness!
