Reed or Dunlap?

Postby Hawk Sista » Wed Jan 27, 2021 12:34 pm

I looked for this discussion here, but couldn’t find it. I read on 710 that it may come down to choosing Reed or Carlos. One thing is for sure, our pressure improved quite a bit after we nabbed Carlos - so without looking into the details, my gut says Dunlap, though Reed has a 5M guarantee coming.

What makes this challenging is the reduction of the cap due to Covid. I know it’ll NEVER fly, but a percentage reduction for everyone (including RW) to mitigate the salary cap reduction’s impact “feels” fair. That said, saving billionaires 10-15M and hurting the players doesn’t seem right at all. David Moore made the league minimum last year. Hmmmm :!:

Thoughts?

Good to hear from you again, Sis. It's been a while.

We need help at both the interior of the DL and at DE. Our Defense started to play a lot better when Dunlap arrived and Jarran Reed started producing better then as well.
Losing either would be difficult to replace, IMO and it's tough because Dunlap is 3 yrs older than Reed but just as valuable or maybe more.
Are people suggesting trading one of them or that they can't extend one or the other for a couple of years to lower the Cap? Lots of Cap maneuvers can be done to lessen
the hit this upcoming year. Both are FA's after this year, though.
I would like them to extend Dunlap and re-sign Reed.

Hey yourself, North. It’s always nice to see you; hope you are as well as you can be.

I agree with your thinking and hope we can figure out a way to keep them both. It’s not lost on me that the bulk of Reed’s sacks came after Dunlap arrived. We were terribly thin (meaning not a lot of depth... please no photos of Poona to prove me wrong) at at DT.

Even though our D finished stronger than it started, I guess I’ll never quite understand the off season w/ regard to the DL as a whole. Maybe if Bruce and Benson would have been healthy all year??? I dunno. Admittedly, they drafted Taylor (who was expected to play) and Robinson (who looks like he’s the real deal), but we clearly needed more.

I agree with wanting to keep both, and so far what I've read of not being able to seems more speculative than certain. But with the certain reduction to the salary cap nobody is gonna be able to keep everybody ... it's gonna be an interesting offseason that's for sure.

That might mean extensions at less than they might have expected will be possible.
If all FA’s will be getting less across the league it might work in our favor in the long term.
Or they re-sign short term extensions like 2 years.
I just hope we keep them.

Dunlap if we can only keep one. The man has some life in him. Reed doesn't seem to be able to take it to the next level.

This off-season will be new territory for sure. Some of the factors off the top of my head: 1) the # of QBs switching teams will likely be at an all time high (2 teams in the NFCW may get née signal callers), 2) the reduced cap #, 3) lots of new GMs, & 4) the abbreviated (or nonexistent) college season leaving plenty of questions. Interesting.

We had quite a bit of QB switching last season: Brady, Rivers, Newton, and to a lesser degree, Dalton, Bridgewater, and Foles.

Hi HS!! We missed you! Tough choice, I agree with the rest of the guys. I would say Dunlap by a nose because he can teach the other guys. We will have some other tough choices to make as well!

I lisatwned to Brock and Salk’s podcast this week. They were talking about a publication (sorry, don’t remember which) that set the over-under at 18 starting QB changes. They include Brees, Watson, Rogers, Goff, Jimmy G, Dak, Rivers, Darnold, Jax, Trubisky, Lock, Stafford, Wentz, Big Ben, Cam, etc...

Worthlessburger and Brees are likely retiring, perhaps Rivers as well. In the dismissal of Pederson, the Eagles have pretty much made a statement that Wentz is staying. Not sure where the Goff rumors got started. Several of those guys are under contract and will be difficult to move.

But I do agree that this year's QB shuffle could trump last season's. I was just noting that last season had more than the usual QB changes.

Rivers has officially retired. Unless he changes his mind a la Favre.
18 seems like a lot (about 56%), but in going over all the teams and thinking about their QB's, it might be that many.
For a number of teams, their current QB's might be replaced by a possible upgrade or younger QB and then
a domino effect might occur.

He's also a sexual predator that trolled non alcoholic clubs to nab the young'uns Obi, 'Worthlessberger' is a relatively kind twist on his name. I don't care about his accomplishments he'll get no respect from me.

That's exactly why I call him that. I have very little respect for the man.

The Pittsburgh QB has a Cap number of $41 million in 2022 and has said he's willing to renegotiate it so it sounds like he's coming back.

Yes. He’s a slime ball, that Ben. And now after assault & predatory acts, he praises the lord for everything. I’m not a religious person & I don’t begrudge anyone personal growth. It just all feels as fake and plastic as it can be. He may have beaten us in XL (don’t get me started), but the dude is a loser.

Continuing on with the QBs changing teams, it's getting ugly in Houston.
DeShaun Watson has demanded a trade and removed the Texans from his social media accounts.
Their new GM has said he's not trading him, so it looks like quite an impasse at the moment.
Maybe more money will smooth things over.

Not only does Watson want out of H-town, JJ Watt is rumored to have played his last game as a Texan:

Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt might also be on the move soon, according to reports from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and James Palmer.

Rapoport said the organization knows it has a decision to make on Watt’s future. Palmer said Watt’s coaches and teammates believe he’s “played his last game as a Texan.”

So yea, it's getting ugly.

Old but Slow wrote:Perhaps they could trade Jamal Adams. Rob Staten at Seahawks Draft Blog makes a compelling article about that possibility, and it makes sense to me. It could free up resources and provide some of the draft picks they have lost

It may be enough to allow signing both Dunlap and Reed.

What a waste of 1st round picks that would be to trade Jamal Adams.

They are not going to trade Adams, I was not for making the deal but it would make PC look like an idiot if we did.

Hey, old man! Great to see you poking your head in here again!

I would be shocked if we were to trade Adams unless it was part of a multi player deal or something strange. Adams may or may not be worth what we paid for him, but as Obi said, it would give our franchise the appearance of disarray.

We have traded 3rd round picks for players in Clowney and Richardson and not pursued another contract. The haul given up for Adams is more of course, but JS seems to be willing to admit when they have made a mistake
and move on. I don't think they will do that with Adams, unless they can't afford his contract demands because Pete seems to think Adams "Tilts the field" as he likes to say about players with
something that's different. I don't think we would see Adams pass rushing as much if our DL was better at it on their own, but if that hasn't changed, they may keep him just to be able to get
to the QB.

Adams performed at a high level. Even missing 3 games, he set the record for sacks by a defensive back. The guy is worth spending on. Not sure how much, but we will see.
