I'm not so sure that the Cards are that far away from being a contender. They were 8-8 last season with 5 of those losses being by a TD or less, barely missed the playoffs, and will be playing a 3rd place schedule next season. If Watt stays healthy, he could cause offenses real problems.
It does seem a bit strange, but maybe it was the most money and perhaps he wanted it to be done quickly.
We sure are the weak sisters along the LoS now in the NFC West. All 3 other teams have better personnel than us.
With Watt’s injury history they are taking on a bit of a gamble, though but if he stays healthy they could be a lot tougher
to both pass and run on.

"I'm here because of you (Kyler Murray)"

Watt chose Arizona for the money and sun. And you're trying to extrapolate this as him choosing Arizona because of a stable QB situation for a team that didn't even make the playoffs the past 2 years?
Are you trying to prove J.J. Watt is dumb?
RiverDog wrote:You need to direct your criticism to JJ Watt. He's the one that said that Kyler Murray is "the reason I'm here". I'm simply repeating what Watt said.
As far as Murray being "not that gootd", it's open for debate. Murray was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 and posted some very respectable numbers in 2020. It's not unreasonable to think that he's a rising star.

I take offense at your stable QB situation talk. It had nothing to do with J.J. Watt's decision. We've had plenty of players willing to come to Seattle in free agency or trades.
We're coming off a division win and 12-4 season. They're coming off 8-8 and watching the playoffs from the couch.
Kyler Murray threw 26 TDs to 12 ints, way worse than Russell. Yet somehow he's the up and comer they're looking to join? Sorry, not buying it.
RiverDog wrote:My statement was in response to Obi's claim that the Cards are "at least 2-3 years away from being a real bona fide contender.". That's a really long time in the NFL. I don't think they are a top 5 contender, but their 8-8 record alone deserves some consideration as a team that could be on the verge of a breakout season. The Browns, for example, went from 6-10 to 11-5. A 3 or 4 game improvement for a team like the Cards of whom will be playing a 3rd place schedule isn't that outrageous.
Watt's own statement refutes your claim that a stable QB situation, ie Murray, had nothing to do with his decision. You're going to have to reconcile your claim with that statement before you can get me to believe your assertation.
As far as Murray himself goes, his performance statistically was roughly middle of the road. He wasn't top 10 and won't be mentioned in the same breath as Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson, but performed better than a number of QB's his age, like Daniel Jones, Joe Burrow, and Mitch Turbisky, and roughly the same as ROY Justin Hebert. He's top 5 of the younger QB's with 3 years or less experience.
Watt said that the decision to pick the Cardinals was “certainly close” and pointed to various reasons why the team was appealing to him. Watt said they have a “young, extremely talented quarterback” in Kyler Murray who he believes can take another step forward in his third season and noted the presence of players like safety Budda Baker and edge rusher Chandler Jones on defense.

That’s a quote from PFT after he signed. He’s also reunited with a defensive coach he had earlier in his career.
