New OT Rule Proposed

Postby RiverDog » Fri Mar 05, 2021 6:38 am

The Ravens have introduced a revolutionary overtime concept known as “spot and choose,” according to a report from Pro Football Talk. The concept is simple. One team would pick where to spot the ball and other would choose whether to play offense or defense. It would still feature a sudden death outcome.

“It works like this: One team picks the spot of the ball to start overtime, and the other team chooses whether to play offense or defense,” wrote Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “If the one team picks, for example, the offense’s own 20 yard line, the opponent would then choose whether to play offense from their own 20 or to play defense, with the other team having the ball on its own 20. This would minimize greatly the impact of the coin toss; under this proposal, the coin toss would be used only to give the team that wins the toss the right to pick the spot of the ball (along with the end zone to be defended) or to choose offense or defense.”

This reminds me of my mom's solution to arguments between my brother and I as to who got the larger slice of cake: She would make one of us cut a large piece of cake into two smaller pieces then let the other choose which piece they wanted. And boy, did it work!

But I like the idea, and I think it's worth trying out. There would still be a coin flip at the start of OT, but it would reduce the value of winning it and put a lot of pressure on the team that wins the toss. I suppose each team would have their own analytics chart to guide them.

Meh. I don't know about this. It seems a bit unnecessarily gimmicky to me.

The Ravens have also re-introduced the idea of an official in the booth.
I think this has much more merit and importance than changing the OT rules.

IMO there should not only be a referee in the booth, it should be the crew chief that's in the booth. He should have supervisory authority over the refs on the field and have the ability to overturn calls on the spot without having to go through the review process.

As far as the OT rules go, I'd like to see it done on a temporary basis and see how the teams and fans respond. At least it would mitigate the effect of the coin flip.

No thanks. You still have a coin toss. That would be the next complaint.
How about eliminate the coin toss completely? The team with the most offensive total yards during regulation gets the ball first (no defense complaints, they should have prevented it).
And if the first team to possess scores a touchdown game over rule should be eliminated as well. Each team gets a shot. If more ties, so be it.

Rather than total yards I'd prefer that they go to first downs. Total yards can be subjective as it's up to the scorekeeper to determine if it was a 7 or 8 yard gain, which could lead to accusations of favoritism. First downs are more definitive. If they have the same number of first downs then they can go by total yards.

First downs would be fine. Something to give a team an advantage that was earned in regulation time.
Furthermore, if each team received at least one possession regardless, the team that earned the "advantage" would be able to choose whether to kick or receive in OT.
Something of this nature is what I would like to see versus coin tosses, touchdown ends game, flipping coins and spotting balls, blah, blah, blah.
